Im assuming they have a Sky sub. Just swap the boxes and pair the card which you should be able to do online otherwise you need to contact Sky to get them to do it.

Two sattelite feeds will be required to allow recording of a channel which isint currently being displayed,
If noise becomes an issue after changing to a recording box, you could upgrade the internal HardDrive to a solid state HardDrive from Amazon there fairly cheap these days, less heat or moving parts,
I've upgrade a sky box and virgin media multiroom box

Yes - but only the free HD channels, i.e. BBC, ITV etc. To get the vast majority of HD channels, they'll need to upgrade their subscription.

I heard that sky sports is only broadcast in HD,

Currently waiting for card to pair....i got a box this evening seems to work , followed instructions to pair and acticste it its been about 5 hours and still no channels. Not sure if i need to wait or try again.

If still no channels tomorrow ill ring sky do they typically mind people swappjng out their box by themselves?

You could try rebooting the box and if that doesnt work you might need a software update- follow the instructions here. Alternatively just wait until tomorrow and call them.

Sky wont mind you swapping boxes so long as the money keeps coming in. As mentioned above you/your parents will need a HD sub to view all HD channels in whatever pack you are subscribed to.
