if the mods want to move this to a move this to a more appropriate forum pls feel free.

my grandparents died serveral years ago and my father has been running the farm since but unfortunately is no longer in a position short to medium term to be actively involved in the farm, the animals can be taken care of off farm so there is no need so water or electricity.

So the problem is the house has the main supply which then goes out to several farm buildings and the well, if the house connection is turned off when it is turned back on will the out buildings be involved in recertifing or will they be separate. time wise i dont know how long the power will be off but probably 18 months espically with covid the out buildings are very old possibly 30 to 40 yrs old and probably have the original electric connection.

If reconnected within a certain period there is no recertification. I’d think that is 18-24months but you’d want to confirm that.

Just keep it and pay the standing charge.

AFAIK if a house is disconnected it is only six months and then it has to have recertification. If there is out buildings yes they would have to be recertified as well. I assum you are doing up the house if you are.omly turning it off to save a few bob it not a good idea

As far as I understand utility companies will also levy a low usage charge, where you are using little to no electricity, on top of the standing charge. So it will probably cost you approx €300/year to keep up a connection that is using little to no electricity.

However it is probably still worth it to keep the connection in place as doesn't it cost thousands to reconnect?

For the time op is talking I’d be keeping it on.

What condition is the house in? If the fabric and floors and roof are usable in the future then a dehumidifier running in the house will help preserve it.

I got a two bed house done about 3years ago. It cost about 450 euro. It entails two visits by electrician. He has to test and pre certify and then final certificate when power is turned on. The house was only about 15 years.omd so no issues. If it was as really old you might run into issues as we which would add to cost. To recertify an.old farm house, sheds and pump house found cost 1k+. I be very slow to turn off electricity.

Also there is new electrical cable specs out in the past couple of years regarding wire gauge that might mean it might be a more to reconnecting than when you done it three years ago bass. I would be very reluctant to turn off electricity too. Could end up screwing yourself

its not an option unfortunately there is considerable fire damage (not electrical related) but the house will have to have significant repairs, maybe even rebuilt, we are in the process of getting it assessed to see where we stand

Get an electrician to disconnect it at the main trip switch box and pay way standing charge. Remember if doing uo house its hand to have an electrical supply. I forgot as well as electrician fees you have to pay a reconnection fee to the ESB ( about 90 euro I think), As well I seem to recollect that if it goes longer than two year's now it may be considered a new connection
