Ran a speed test on speedtest.com using Opera browser on my Moto G7. It showed me as located in South Africa. This is wrong, I'm in Ireland

Did the same on Chrome and it showed correct location and IP from my ISP.

Whois shows the IP belongs to Opera.

Is this normal by Opera, or is there something dodgy going on?

Do you have the built-in Opera VPN enabled?

The browser offers a secure proxy service which routes all of your browser data via their servers to hide your location. Haven't used Opera in a long time myself, but last time I checked you could decide which region that you would like the 'VPN' to claim you are in, which is handy for accessing alternative versions of Netflix, etc. The option used to be located at Settings>Privacy and Security.

VPN seems to have disappeared from my Opera browser. Might have a broken browser. Maybe it's broken and set to ON.

    Will try a reinstall.

    Edit:

Installed latest version of Opera. VPN is off. Still get Opera IP address but this time from Germany. Bit of a pain when web sites think I'm in another country e.g., search results are skewed, Amazon asking do I want to use .de site.

It's hard to get malware on an android phone unless you install apps that are not from the play store. Use brave browser or chrome if you want to buy something or search for something.

Problem solved. Opera data saving feature routes through Opera servers.
