UK Ireland ferry, visitor without licence

    Hi All,

I was unsure about whether to post this in the Motors or Travel forum, so if it needs to be moved, please excuse me and move as necessary.

I have a family member coming over from the UK next week, travelling Holyhead - Dublin. He is driving his van over, as he has his own business & will be following all guidance re self-isolation on arrival etc.

The question I have is, he applied for a new driving licence over 6 weeks ago and hasn't yet received it. In the process of applying for the licence, he needed to send his passport to the DVLA as proof of identity. I imagine they have a backlog due to covid and this is why he's in his current situation.

I know he doesn't need to have a passport on him to make the journey, however without either his licence or passport, does anyone know if he'll have any issues getting out of Dublin Port on arrival? I've spoken to the Port Company who didn't know the answer and I've attempted to contact customs to enquire, however I can't get through to them.

If anyone had any knowledge on whether he might encounter any issues getting out of the port, I'd appreciate your advice. It's a bit of an odd one.

    Thanks in Advance.

Should be fine at the port but if questions get asked having no photo ID to verify identity is a bad idea.

Driving here with no licence could mean van gets seized until ID and insurance is proven if stopped on open road by Gardai.

He should bring his cert of insurance, proof of address and perhaps V5 of van to prove ownership. If he had a photocopy of passport or driving licence they would also help.

Thanks for that, it all makes sense.

    Appreciate the advice.
