Promised my brother a PC to go with the RTX2060 and Rift S I bought him and he was getting my 6700k CPU when I upgraded to an Intel 10 series. That turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, and if I was sticking with Intel, it looks like Rocketlake early next year is a better bet. AMD Zen 3 is also delayed I hear.

I cant make him wait till next year to build him the PC and give him the Rift S. However the spare Z87 mITX i have only has an i5 4670k and the lack of multithreading is going to hurt VR performance. A Haswell CPU is already on the edge of acceptability for VR.

If I were to buy an i7 4790K (That I can delid and OC) to use with the Z87, whats the most I should pay for one in 2020?

You should get a Ryzen 3-3300X as it's better :pac:

    To elaborate:
The 3300X is as good a gaming CPU as the i7-7700K.

Even the £99 3100 would be a better buy.

Give him the 6700K and get yourself a Ryzen 3600 or 3700X.

A £100 Ryzen 3300X is basically a 7700K these days. Can combo it with a £40 A320M if budget is tight for example, and both together still cost less or similar to a slower, 2nd hand 4770 or 4790 on its own.

Z87 should get at least €70, 4670K say, €40 or 50. Even at about €120, that goes a fair way towards a Ryzen 3600 and B450M which is better than 6700K in general (way more cores/threads)

Or else just buy him a Ryzen 3100 + A320M for €150. Faster than 4770 4790 setup, brand new, latest platform, DDR4 support etc.
