Is there any legal issues having hens in back garden?

Hi, Im living in a semidetached house, and have a back garden. I have 4 rohd island red and they are quite. I wish to buy some hens and ducks if there is no legal issues (sound).

To be completely legit you should have a flock number. Easily got.

In the first instance you are required to have a poultry flock/herd number. You need to apply to DAFM irrespective of how many poultry you keep.
Secondly - from memory, you cannot keep a rooster or waterfowl (ducks/geese) in suburban areas unless you get permission from your local CoCo.

They should eventually get in touch to send you a flock number/ may inspect before they give it, but it can take a while before they respond. If you need to chase them just phone your regional etc office at the Dept of Agri. Then once a year they post out a census form to you where you say how many chickens you currently have/ where you brought them from - you just return it by post. And if there is an outbreak of bird flu etc they text you and let you know

DAFM will contact you but I think due to Covid-19 restrictions there is a delay in reply's.

We have 4-5 running around and no number

As mentioned they attract vermin, mice but rats and lots of them. I started with filling the feeder and leaving out, all was good till the feed was going really quick so I stopped. I throw out feed now in morning to them instead. We are in detected with large garden so didn’t affect neighbour as the boys moved into a ditch but not nice....in a semi D your neighbour might not be too happy.

You need a flock number same as everyone should.

In the event of a serious disease outbreak that may threaten the national flock then all flocks will need to be accounted for.

Cause it informs DAFM of the location of small poultry breeders/backyard keepers in the event of a outbreak of a notifiable Avian disease.
