Queenstown In Conjunction With Oz

    Hi.
Looking for a bit of advice.
We are looking to go to Australia for 3 weeks late next year. But we also want to spend 4 days in Queenstown at some point.
I’m thinking it makes most sense from a travel POV To do this either right at the start or at the very end of the trip?
Or would we be Better off to start in Melbourne, fly to Queenstown next and finish off the Oz trip after Queenstown?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The last time I did it around six years ago I flew outbound DUB-Dubai-Bangkok-Sydney-Christchurch - drove down to Queenstown

Back stopped in Sydney and flew straight to Dubai

Might make sense to start in Queenstown and work your way back

First time I went to NZ after Australia. Had such a good time I came home wishing I had skipped Australia and just gone to NZ. Four days is very little time by the time you take out the flight times etc..
Personally I would keep the best til last :) and try get a week there.

No idea what your ties are to Australia, if any, but if I was you I'd spend all the time in New Zealand. We spent 10 weeks there last year touring around and 3 weeks in Tasmania and Melbourne. I personally think Australia pales in comparison to New Zealand in terms of scenery and would encourage anyone heading to that side of the world for an outdoor holiday to prioritize time in New Zealand.

If you are to stick with your current plan, I would also say that 4 days around Queenstown is very little. There's a huge amount to do around the town itself but the wider areas to the north towards Mt. Cook and west to Fiordland are incredible.

Would agree with others that 4 days is very short for New Zealand. Not sure what your plans for Austrailia are or if youve been before but the distances between cities and attractions there is vast.

The south island of NZ is spectacular and deserves at least a week, 10 days would be better. Sample itinerary could be Christchurch then whale/dolphin watching in Kaikoura then take the Trans Alpine railway across to Franz Josef glacier (or Fox glacier) and take a trek on the glacier itself. Then down to Milford Sound (or Doubtful Sound) , over to Dunedin (good tour of the Cadburys chocolate factory there) and then up to Queenstown for a few days for the activities around there. Wanaka also good for a night or two.

Ive lived & travelled all over both and the south island of NZ easily my favourite. Lots of people Ive known have tacked on a few days in NZ at the end of an Oz holiday and then regretted not having enough time there when they like it so much.

Totally agreed. I did Aus and NZ a few years back, three weeks in Oz and one week in NZ. Was sorry afterwards I didn't do it the other way around. The southern island of NZ alone is worth two weeks.

We were lucky enough to have 6 weeks in a camper van in the south island before Christmas and honestly it still wasn't enough! So much to see and do there.
