Check to make sure that any ‘mute’ button isn’t sticking, either on the radio unit itself or on the steering wheel/stalk controls if the vehicle has them. Next step would be to check if there’s a mute switch wire in the radio wiring loom that is earthing somewhere behind your dash, that would also cause the unit to mute unnecessarily.

Is there an aftermarket phone kit fitted? Beyond what I posted above or a fault in the radio itself an aftermarket kit could cause the radio to mute if it developed a fault or the wiring got caught up against an Earth in the vehicle.

Thanks. Yes it has a aftermarket phone kit fitted.

If you’re not up for pulling the radio out yourself & messing about with wiring looms the easiest way to get it back working again (if it’s not a sticky mute button) is to bring it to someone who installs & repairs radios & phone kits.

Took it out this morning, no sign of any loose wires. I wonder if I put a after market cd player/radio would that solve the problem?

Most likely. If you still have the radio out see if you can quickly disconnect the mute if the phone kit is connected to it. If the radio comes back you know it’s a problem with the phone kit, if not you know the problem is with the radio unit.
