Just done the belt on the 1.9 tdi A6 2002
    Simple question
    It's a dayco belt
All new parts, including waterpump, tensioner and i changed altenator belt, clutch pulley and alternator tensioner
It can only be described as a groaning or whirring type sound, low sound now but I notice others wouldn't
Only between 950 too 1150 rpm.
Can only really be heard at idle
Everything tight and speced to torque,no rubbing parts
Do these belts take time to bed in
    4kms so far
    420 000 on the car
    Car runs perfectly
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply lads, I had the serp belt of and the sound was still there
Is there an easy way of letting tension of the belt without stripping
Say slightly slacking the nut of the main tensioner on timing belt?

Nope the only way is to totally start over i'm afraid, the belt must be applied in a way that all slack is on the run with the tensioner.

Sound mate, I was hoping it was just the belt running in. It's not bad but I'd rather it right

    Thanks

It will do damage if left too tight so get it sorted for sure! Its a common mistake though so don't feel too bad about it, sounds grand when cold but when the engine heats and expands it starts making the noise.

ah look these things happen did u not give the belt a little twist to see how tight it was.and what about lining up the tensioner pointer in between the two grooves. maybe i described that poorly but line up the tensioner guide as such.

The belt twists no problem. It's doesn't seem to be overtight. Sounds more like a bearing sound, the new waterpump wouldn't be scrap by any chance? That pointer is exactly were you said. Haven't had a chance yet to strip it.
