Im currently living in the uk and will be moving to Ireland in the next 8-10 months which means i will be bringing a car with me
Im currently undecided on the golf R or the Mercedes , the golf R would be the mk 7.5 which i have found insurance quotes for but the a45 Mercedes is my problem car i cant find a registered one in Ireland to get the registration number to get insurance quotes for would be either looking at the 2016/2017 model in uk Ive tried lots to try find it on drop bar menus but it doesn't show on most insurance providers
any help in the right direction would be great.
also anyone who owns either and could give me there opinion

is there a website most use to check insurance prices on higher end spec cars

    thanks Scott

The AA quoted me on a GTR for under €1100 last year so I'm sure they would have no problem with either car.

You'll probably need a decent NCB.

there isn't any listed that i have found to make any comparisons

Looking at 2016/2017 which at the minute price is 26-30k sterling any idea what they are worth here ?

Can you use your UK ncb here?

LIberty will definitely take account of it and I would be surprised if some of the others did not as well.

No clue, the closest I can find is a brand new A35, which isn't really that close and it costs 75k euro. You're probably best calling a main Mercedes-Benz dealer like Annesley Williams or MSL.

I'd forget about online insurance quotes for those type of cars, better off contacting insurance brokers and let them do the work for you. Brokers can sometimes get insurance at a cheaper rate than you going directly to the insurance company especially on performance cars.

As to which car to buy, that's a tough one. The A45 AMG is certainly a rare sight on these roads compared to the Golf R but I'd imagine it's hard to beat the Golf R's overall cheaper running costs given the performance it offers. I would imagine there would be very few if any AMG specialists about in Ireland meaning you would probably be at the mercy of Mercedes dealers prices for maintenance and repairs.

I have no ownership experience of either so just my 2c worth.

A guy at work has a Golf R, said it was under 700 to insure with full NCB around 30yo or so. His previous car was a e92 m3 and says he will be trading the golf for a m4 soon as he regrets selling the M3.

Other than that, I know absolutely nothing about either car.

    How tall are you?

I find all the recent Mercedes ranges ( A, B and C class anyway) to be very low, and wouldn’t be able to buy one/ live with one. I’m 6’2”

Ive seen a guy in cork driving an A45 recently in my local garage a 2016 looks to be only in his late20s/30s ill ask him if i see him.

Aren’t they 2 completely different animals? The A35 is a lot closer to the R than an A45...

My insurance went down from a Megane diesel to a Cupra.

A45 is 380bhp vs the Golf's 300 odd. The Golf R's direct competition would be an S3 whereby the A45 takes on the RS3. I've an CLA45 SB on my shopping list in about 2 years time but they are very very expensive when you look at M140i, S3 , R and so on.

Nope the insurance companies here are bigger gangsters than anywhere else, no surprise.

I had 9 years NCB and a clean driving record in (NI) when I moved down to Dublin 2.5 years ago.
I paid £550 sterling or thereabouts on any of my cars without fail , slight increases or decreases every year.

The VERY SAME 2011 MK6 golf I could not get a quote for less than €14/1500 the rotten b*stards. I said sure how does it matter? It’s the same roads essentially if I’m living in Tyrone and I move across the border to Monaghan.

Managed to get €1000 all in with FBD, I get the whole insurance claims conscious society is down here but that’s scandalous like.

You can say “nope” all you like but I have first hand experience of Liberty accepting my UK NCB on two vehicles. And in each case I had a recent (glass) claim.

I had a CLA45 for a few years with similar NCB to you. Insurance was always around the 600/650 euro mark.

I’ve never driven a Golf R but the 45 Mercs (mine was the 381PS version you’ll get on a 2016/17 model) are absolutely ballistic in a straight line. Interior quality is lacking though, mine felt like it was just thrown together. Very disappointing for what you might expect from an AMG Mercedes. Parts are ridiculously expensive here aswell.

Chill will give you a ballpark quote for a performance car. You can look up a car by make and model if you don't have a registration number. You can then go on to input all your personal details for a more accurate quote (which goes up ). Not sure what you would do about transferring your NCB but I can't imagine it's a problem. Works the other way around!

P.S. I don't work for them. I'm just always thinking of changing the car :D

Do you rate the 45? An estate/shooting brake model was on my radar but felt possibly a bit small after sitting in one. I'm 6'2" & 98kgs :o

Despite the lack of interior quality I loved it. Seriously rapid, good gearbox, excellent brakes. However I’d say anyone over 6 foot will feel cramped in the CLA45

The A45 is a beast, but would still prefer the model 3..
