    Hi There
I need to release some storage on my iPhone 7 to download an ios update to use the Covid app.
I have a lot of photos and when I try to upload them to my laptop I get a message saying they will not open and I cannot delete them either.
There are over 8gb of them.
Also, the phone is prompting me to upload my photos to iCloud. How does this work ?
Do I have to pay for this ?
    Thanks in advance ..

Hi there, see the documents attached for information,

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204570

Here are the prices for storage. 50 Gb is probable enough for 0.99c per month but as you can see the option for Euro allow for larger amounts up to 2 Tb.

    Good luck:D

    Hi boardsies,
I have read the link PaulT21 posted above, and also the below one.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204570

    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT205328

My iphone is an 8, 64gb. I purchased 50gb of icloud storage and I have icloud photos turned on.
So I logged onto my HP laptop this morning and downloaded "icloud" and "icloud shared albums" to my laptop from the microsoft app store for windows 10 and above.

Is this the best way at reducing storage on your iphone? My 8 has recently gotten quite slow and it lags a bit, so I'm thinking it's the 21gb on photos. It shows i Have only 47gb out of 64gb used but I have noticed a reduction in speed - the phone was purchased in March 2018 which may also be a factor..
Thinking of upgrading to an 11 - although I've no idea if the 11 is fine, or it's worth splashing out on a pro or a max?

It also shows me that whatsapp is taking up 2.7gb - even though I have photos from whatsapp turned off so they dont store. If I delete all this whatsapp data will it just leave my conversations blank?

    Thank you in advance!!!

The only old method I knew of was to download Itunes .

I have tried ourchasing "file clean" apps on the apple app store on my phone, that promise to reduce photos easily. They aren't great to be honest.

Download Google Photos and sync them to it.

Thanks - on laptop or phone Reg?

I downloaded the icloud app to the laptop and unless it's syncing it doesn't look to be of any use at all. It just keeps showing this and I can't advance past it. I thought it was going to be an app that would enable me to log in and delete photos like I would on the phone, update my notes etc. Looks like you still have to go through icloud website on browser to do that?

On the phone. It’s free if you pick High Quality (difference is not noticeable unless you’re blowing photos up to A4 or something). Then you can install the app on any device or go to photos.google.com from a browser and view them all. Has some nice AI stuff for searching and all too.

Even check some photos after you sync and make sure you’re happy before deleting. Also, when deleting use the Google Photos app to do it as it won’t get rid of anything not backed up yet. If you manually delete then you run the risk missing stuff. It’s definitely the best way to browse your photo collection too, I’d find it far superior to iCloud.

If you need to free a lot of space on your phone, the best way is to move the photos from your phone to your computer (if you have one).

If you sync to iCloud, you can turn on the option to optimise iPhone storage, which will copy the original photos to iCloud and keep low res copies on your iPhone.

The iCloud app on windows isn’t very good, but it’s a convenient way to download a lot of photos from iCloud. You can download from iCloud.com but that’s going to be very slow.

Did you try plugging you iPhone into the computer and copying through file explore?

As I said, when I connect my phone to my laptop the photos wont open and it won't let me delete them either. Also when I try to enable iCloud storage on my phone it tells me that I cannot ?

It won’t let you delete them? Are you syncing the photos to iTunes on the computer by any chance?

What’s the error message when you try to enable iCloud storage?

Opening iOS photos on a windows PC can be awkward as they are in a non standard file format. You will probably need to install an app to allow you to view them. Can’t remember the file format, but a quick google will tell you.

That may have been true in the past but not now. I'm on iOS 13 and Windows 10 (latest version). I can import directly on File Explorer.

Go into Settings->General->iPhone Storage and that will show you a horizontal bar graph of what is using your storage between apps, photos, etc.

Below that it will list the apps using the most storage. Some apps can be surprisingly large and some can create a large cache over time.
