Heating System leak and Pressure Pump failure.

I just discovered that the pressure refill valve on our gas boiler had been very slightly on all the time.

When the boiler was heating up, the needle on the pressure meter would go into the red zone and then settle back down.

But, for a long time (a year, or so) I haven't had to top up the system.

During the last year, two radiators developed a tiny amount of seepage. I was able to fix these - not sure if they're related to refill valve.

When I discovered the problem with the valve the other day, I turned it off.

The pressure fell back into the red zone. So, I turned off the gas and heated the water with the immersion.

The water pump, which pressurizes the shower and taps, stopped working.

So, I topped up the refill valve on the boiler. This made no difference.

Then, I turned on the gas boiler. After a few minutes, the pump started working again.

    So, all is well now.

But, why did the water pressure pump stop working?

Because the refill valve on the boiler was slightly on for a while, might this have damaged the system?

    Thanks.

    D.

Ps. I have boiler service booked for tomorrow. But, they don't do plumbing. Hard to get a plumber these days.
