So, my eyesight isn't the best so I've avoided getting a smartphone all these years because the average screen is a little on the small side for me. I'm looking for a large tablet I can use for my ebooks but also replace my phone with. So I need something able to make phone calls from mt existing number. ~I don't need something to play games on.

    Need:
    Large screen
    Replace phone
    play videos and audiobooks
Not expensive, it doesn't need to run games

There are just so many devices out there I don't know where to start. I've never had the need to keep up with smartphones and tablets as I have always done everything on my desktop.

These days you can go pretty big phones if you want.

For example there is this with very good specs and 6.9" screen.

    https://www.eglobalcentral.eu/xiaomi-max-3-4gb-64gb-dual-sim-sim-free-unlocked-black.html

If you want to go for a tablet you may only be gaining 0.1 of an inch. Would this be big enough or would you prefer a tablet? They usually come in 7",8" and 10"

You can also get what's called a launcher from the Google play store that can change the appearance of your phone's layout. If you search big launcher it will list a good few. Have a look at the pictures of them and see what you think. It may help by making things easier to see.

    Example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phongphan.launcher.older

    Good value 10" tablet:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Galaxy-SM-T515-Black-Version/dp/B07PM7SLPZ

If you don't like it they will take it back no problem. Go with the IT version as it's cheapest but should be the exact same as the UK version. You'll just need to select English in languages in the initial setup

Buy any Android phone, go to settings -> accessibility -> font size and increase it as much as you need.

Depends how big a screen you want op, phones are already on the large side these days, with substantial screens, and as Aristotle says you can change Font size to suit, so are you looking more at 10" tablet size kind of things?

Edit: just read DopeTech's post, and they sum it up perfectly.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Get a decent large screen phone and a Tablet on the side.
For 199 I just got a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2019 tablet and it's perfect for the use that you describe.

I think 10" would be preferable to a 7". Would be trying to read Whatsapp messages and that. I rarely make a voice call anymore and I don't want to have two devices to keep charged and carry around. Is any tablet with a sim card going to be able to take the sim from my phone and work fine or do they perform differently by product?

Additional question: I saw a video that said the Samsungs with sim slots will work just like a phone, If I can get my hands on one would it work with a Bluetooth earphone/mic thing so I can keep the tablet in my bag on the odd occasion that I am actually just making a call?

    Yes that should work too.

You won’t get WhatsApp on a tablet without a phone version to link it to. You might have a chance with a cellular tablet if you install and apk manually.

So the tablets that accept a sim card won't necessarily come ready to dial/do other phone things?

Yes they will. He was just saying if you want WhatsApp you have to have a sim in the device.

I've had a tablet with a sim. When I was between phones I used the tablet for a couple of weeks as my main device.
It is exactly the same as a phone with a huge screen. You can use WhatsApp etc. and Bluetooth works exactly the same as it would on a phone.

this tablet is 8 inch but still of a decent screen area size compared to a phone. screen brigthness is also very good.

it takes a sim card and would work with bluetooth earphones to make and receive calls

delivery is through Europe so no worries about extra charges

make sure it's the "LTE" version selected. does lack LTE band 20 which some operators use but does have LTE band 3 which operators also use

it's a very well made tablet from Xiaomi with very good battery life

as it takes a sim card you can use whatsapp etc like you would with a phone

I can vouch for that Mi Pad 4 (have the WiFi version). Great spec and well built for the price.

Where would I find out if it's going to work with Three (I don't want to change provider)?

    it will work for three.

just that where the 4G band 3 can't be picked up you will be on HSPDA+ for data which is still pretty decent for most uses.

for phone calls the lack of band 20 is not an issue
