Is there a way to transfer to the same department in another town in the civil service other than the mobility route?
From what I can see, with the mobility route,
1 you can to be there two years and
2 you can be offered any department

I'm only in CS 1 year and like the department I work for. They have another office in another county which I would be interested in moving to.
Google is telling me there are ways to move internally but I can't see anywhere how to go about it.

Edited to add im an EO
    Thanks

The only route I could see would be a voluntary head to head transfer. Do they still have those ads in the Union magazine?

I've received emails from HR before: ' X grade from Y office would like to transfer to Z office, is there anyone at X grade looking to transfer to Y office '

They are quite rare, as mostly Dublin based workers are looking to move to counties closer to their home.

Mobility is the only game in town. You apply and go on a waiting list. Your place is set when you apply and then you have to qualify.

Only way to move internally is within the same zone and for those HEO and above currently outside the mobility net

Mobility is the only way, there was never a Central Transfer List for the EO grade within the Civil Service.

Your Department may have an internal Transfer List that it utilises to fill vacancies - that is something to talk to HR about. You may get lucky, but since mobility I haven't seen or heard of a lateral transfer for an EO or CO outside of mobility (that's not to say it hasn't happened in isolated instances)

    Best of luck getting it

The information you've been given is wrong.

You can chose the dept you move to on mobility as you can just say no to the depts you dont want you are not obliged to move.

Here are your options to move to your desired office.

For ease sake I'm going to say you work in Dept of Potatoes (DoPP Wex), Wexford Town office and you want to move to DoPP's Waterford City office. Here are all the ways I can think to move:

    1. Go to HR and ask if they have an internal transfer list and how it works and whether you can move to DoPP waterford. They may have criteria, most likely that you've passed probation. This is a local matter so i can't help. But it would be the best way

    2. Also - Apply for mobility. Asap as the sooner you do it the higher you are on the list.
Look up which "zone" your desired office is in. Apply for mobility to that zone number only and input that you only want our fictional DoPP ONLY. Btw you can reject a transfer to anywhere you don't have to accept it so once you're on the list for your desired zone you can just wait until they reach your number in DOPP. (Note - Dublin transfer only!!! some offices wont allow this if you want to move out of Dublin City Centre offices you'll have to be put on an internal list to get out of the city centre to another office within Dublin.)

    3. When Open EO reopens, apply for it in your desired county, then passing interview etc when they reach your number request to stay in your own dept (presuming there is a vacancy - hence this method is the worst of the three). However this could be the quickest if you're in the right place at the right time.

    4. Apply for a move to your desired office if they advertise an internal secondment / acting up / internal promotion.

    5. Interdept Head to head swaps no longer exist at EO grade. Though you could ask around if anyone internally wants to swap jobs with you. HR may not allow it though.

    6. Redeployment - if your office shuts you could request redeployment there though I think that is very very very unlikely!

I can't think of any other ways to move office. Hope thats helpful.
