2001 Mazda MX5 - failed NCT emissions

Hi. My Mazda MX5 - mk 2.5 failed the NCT a while back and I am trying to get it sorted. I had a new aftersale catalytic converter installed recently but the guy who installed it said it still will not pass the test.

Here are the results of the last test:

    Low Idle (860rpm)
    CO 0.21 vol% - PASS
    HC 448 ppm - N/A

    High Idle (2650 rpm)
    Lambda 0.99 - PASS
    CO 0.52 vol% - MAJOR (must be below 0.30%)
    HC 41 ppm - PASS

I've tried all the usual stuff like an additive and a long hard drive in 3rd gear before the test, but no joy. Any suggestions.

Check that you don't have any exhaust leaks, they can cause a spike in emissions.
What additives did you use? Diptane is highly regarded

    Yes, used Diptane.

There are no obvious leaks in the exhaust. If I knew it was that, then I could at least have a whole new exhaust fitted.

Try changing the engine oil and filters.
