    Hi All,

Due the a very stressful job I had to hand in my notice last week, I was suffering anxiety and stress due to the work load and pressure.

It all happened very quick in the end and I am now starting to feel better thankfully as I was really not well for a couple of months.

My question is do I now have to wait 9 weeks before I can claim Job Seekers allowance due to me "voluntary resignation".

I do plan on making an appointment with my GP this week as I am still not completely right and want to get on top of the hopefully short term depression/anxiety issues I have at the moment.

Would social welfare be receptive to me claiming job seekers before 9 weeks if I explained my position ?

You apply immediately.. Up to them if they put in an exclusion period. I know from experience they don't always apply an exclusion period if you explain the circumstances.

Apply for illness benefit. You can stay on that as long as you are unwell up to a maximum of two years. Your GP will have the forms and they fill in the GPs section. You get a weekly cert then from the GP which you pass on to social welfare.

Go to your gp. If he certifies you fit for work you can apply for jobseekers. If he certifies you unfit apply for illness benefit. Being unfit due to stress in one job does not make you unfit for all jobs. Its between you and your gp

Great, that sounds right for me. I do want to work and I work in I.T. so I am confidant I will get a job soon. But the job I was working at and the conditions of it was the problem

Hi OP. I quit my job in February due to stress also.

I walked down to the social office that day and they let me apply for jobseekers benefit. It was granted a few days later.

They didn't exclude me from any payments. I didn't have any letters from the GP etc..

It was a call centre, they just said yeah we get loads of people walking out of those jobs!

Was alot easier than I expected

    Hope this helps!
