This is the next post in our series in Matthew. The first post in the series is here, and the last is here.
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

This passage raises three questions. Jesus is continuing to explore our heart attitudes. The questions are these:

    Where is your treasure?
What is more important, things on earth or things in heaven? Where do we lay up treasure? Jesus in this passage says that laying up treasure on earth isn't a great idea because it is temporary and it will fade. The world in which Jesus lived and the world in which we are living are consumed with possessions on earth. In verse 20 Jesus compares this to laying up treasures for ourselves in heaven, where things don't rust and things don't get stolen.

    Where is your heart?
Our treasures tell us where our hearts are. What are the things we treasure most? Jesus then moves on to tell us that our eyes are like lamps into our bodies. Our eyes can be healthy or bad. What do our eyes look at? Are our eyes bad or healthy? What impact does that have? Our bodies can be filled with light because of our eyes or they can be filled with darkness.

    Who is your master?
We can only have one master (verse 24). Our desire for wealth isn't just about what we treasure or what we look at. If we love money we will be consumed with it with no room left to love Jesus.

Father thank you for your word. Please help us to treasure what you have to say to us. Please help us to treasure your truth, and our relationship with you more than earthly things. Please help us to realise that we cannot have both money as our master, and you as our master. Please help us to see that wealth can be a servant but never a master. Help us to love you more we pray.

As always - please provide thoughts in the thread below.
