    Hi All

looking for help, my storage was running out so i deleted loads of photos/videos etc

I was still having storage issues and by mistake i deleted DCIM folder.

now all the photos/videos I took are gone.

they were not backed up on google drive and when i tried to recover from there, typical the only ones that arrives were the ones I deleted and dont want.

is there any way to get them back? is it a lesson learned.

I tried downloading diskdigger/dig deep but its showing everything i ever looked at on twitter/facebook/spotify (whihc is really strange in itself) it also finds everything i deleted in my gallery but not the actual photos I want.

i looked online and it advises about rooting your phone, but I think there are risks to this, would that be right?

    any help is welcome

    thanks

There are definitely ways. You will probably have to pay for the best/most secure options but you can definitely retrieve them.

I can't give advice on what the best option is as I've never had to use any and I don't know anyone personally that has.

Was it on an SD card or the internal memory of the phone? If SD it's easy enough to restore everything that's been deleted recently, and hasn't been overwritten by something else. I've had to do this for friends a few times! Best not to take any more pictures or write anything else to that drive or it will start overwriting over those now empty sectors. If you deleted from the phone's internal memory you would need to root the phone for any of those undelete apps to work.

No the only ones that are there are the couple 100 I deleted to originally make room.

It would have been internal storage. I don't have an SD card in it. So I think I will have to root my phone. Is this difficult to do, what exactly does this mean, is it dangerous to the handset? And what do I do after I root it? Will an app like disk digger then work its magic?

Did you set up a Recycle Bin?

Download Recuva onto your PC, plug in your phone and scan.
Recuva will present a list of recoverable files.

Last time I used it, it was freeware.

If the photos were not on an SD card, they could have been sync'ed to your Samsung cloud storage. And the copies could still be there, if there has been no sync since you deleted the photos stored on the phone.

To prevent any new sync (which would push the deletes to the Samsung cloud) until you check your Samsung account, do not put your phone on a charge while wi-fi is active, that's when it automatically does a sync in the background.

No, only the ones I manually deleted went to recycle bin. The ones that got lost from DCIM being deleted are nowhere to be found.

Nothing went to Google pics or Samsung account or anywhere...

I'll try Recuva hopefully I can sort it but I may need to "root" my phone and iv no idea what that is.

The first step of rooting is unlocking the bootloader which will factory reset the phone. You'll need a professional

Thanks, I may need to go to a pro and see if this can be done

Just tried Recuva, its more so for your laptop rather than phone

I used recuva to recover files from my phone sdcard, it worked fine.
Google easus android data recovery tool or look on easus.com
Go to phone settings USB choose file transfer mode
You may need to activate developer mode on the phone to access USB settings
To activate developer mode go to settings about Phone then tap Build no 7 times.
You, ll see a message developer mode activated
Then go to settings, developer mode
    Go to USB
Set USB mode. to file transfer
This should enable your phone to show up on the pc as a device on which you can browse any folder eg like an external drive

Thanks. I have done this but still on the Easeus recovery wizard my handset is still not showing although although it appears straight away when usb plugged.

I'm now down to 2 things

    1) I downloaded an app called mobisaver (found much more than disk digger and digdeep). Which thankfully found most files back to Dec 2018 (only issue is I need them to May 2018 as its the birth of our daughter) strange why it found everything up to this date but didn't go back further, it tells me the pictures are there somewhere :)!

    2) I also deleted whatsapp stuff in the same log as DCIM and it backed up overnight so can only get details from 27th (after I deleted chats) so basically nothing is there only a few hours of stuff

Is there anyway to get previous back up? Even the 26th as this would have all pics sent between family etc.

There is a "whatsapp" section on mobisaver but it says iv to root my phone to do it

theres loads of guides how to root a android phone,
i dont think it needs a professional to do it.
just follow the guide.read it first.

    http://www.file-recovery.com/android_recovery.htm

    from the website link above ;

How to Enable USB Debugging on Samsung Devices Android versions - Gingerbread, Honey Comb and Jelly Bean (v2.3, v3.x and v4.x, respectively):

Further research shows that other Android devices such as LG, HTC, Motorola, Asus, etc… also can be set to use USB Debugging mode so they can be scanned to recover data.

We tested this with Samsung Galaxy S.

the app above looks easy to use , eg active recoveryt app.

try recuva again now that usb mode is set to file transfer mode

    https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

I only used recuva on sdcards
it showed 90 per cent of my files,
green in file scan list =good condition, red = bad condition ,cannot be recovered .

You,ll need to back up all data, videos, images on the phone to another drive before even trying to root the phone

Nearly all phones present MTP to the computer, not USB Mass Storage. This will NOT work for recovery.

Also the photos were deleted 3 days ago now, sounds like the phone wasnt shut down for this time. Recovery will be destroyed by random sectors being written during normal operation. Anticipate high levels of corruption especially as you had a low space issue so the freed space would have been in demand (less chance to get lucky with each write).

I have managed to recover majority of photos and videos from Dec 18 to now using app mobisaver (better than nothing) thanks all for the help

Is there a way to go back a few chat backups on whatsapp? is it stored somewhere. or is it just the last one you can backup

i have never rooted my phone, i plug in my huawei phone to pc usb port,
i click on phone screen it says something like acess phone as usb device ,mtp mode on the phone after 1 minute
in settingson phone ,usb mode, select theres various options, eg usb mass storage device mode, usb file transfer mode 2 etc
depends on what version of adroid you use.
this allows me to acess any folder or file on my phone .
phone shows up as Huawei device drive d on my pc 32gig
You could contact your friends and ask them to send you files or photos ,
    you sent them previously.
mega.nz is an online storage free to use at least for 1gig of storage.
register account ,all you need is an email adress .
to set up an account takes maybe 1 minute.

    https://www.androidcentral.com/how-backup-and-move-your-whatsapp-messages-and-media

if you have a gmail account there,s a free google drive account associated with it ,
you need to have set up a gmail account to install any apps on your phone from the google play store
