Using data points to improve wifi

    Hi,

Have virgin media in the house and a number of data points throughout the house. Looking to use the data points in conjuction with switches to boost WiFi signal.

Seeing lots of things online about powrlijr adapters and mesh systems. However I'm thinking that I could just buy a new router and use it as a repeater and boost signal.

Is there anything I'm overlooking or will that work?

The cheapest option is to buy a few basic cable routers you can use as an AP, each one would have to be synced to each other to ensure a smooth one4all WiFi system.

    TPLink Archer AC1200 for €37

The more reliable option is to use a mesh WiFi system that supports an ethernet backhaul. This way, you get max Virgin bandwidth to each WiFi point (1Gbs) before it emits wifi and it properly handles moving from point to point. Also, you have the WiFi mesh system as a backup if your ethernet is for some reason down or has issues.

Options these days are so cheap, I personally use Google WiFi (I've pretty much Google everything in the house, 4 mesh points) but other just as good option are the TPLink Deco M5s, 2 of them for €109 but you can use many more.

Your Virgin Hub should be switched to modem / bridge mode first for mesh, these will then handle your DHCP and everything else. For AP usage, your Virgin box remains as is and the Archers would be in AP mode (no NAT, no DHCP). You can use WPS to sync the wireless settings with your current hub. This may have problems though due to different hardware devices so you may need to clone the MAC address.

    Best of luck.
