Grass seed question

What grass seed is best for good land taking 2 cuts of silage and then after grass. Have used a silage mixed before but found it went stemmy very quick for 2nd cut. Would a grazing mix be better even though there would be 2 cuts of silage coming off it? No clover. Want something that thickens up and doesn't go stemmy 4 weeks into 2nd cut.I just found the silage mix was quick to go steamy and doesn't thicken out too well even though a bag and a half was spread to the acre of grass seed and it was grazed.

Sounds like you want more Diploids in the mix.

Maybe just oversow some into the stand that's already there?

Its all just a minefield as the mixes don't say diploid but instead give some variety which could be in the diploid category.

Tipperary must have a good mix, field down the road reseeded & sign saying Tipperary grass seed, it’s fantastic for growth, 2 cuts multiple grazings

If you talk to Germinal or the other companies they'll sell you any variety straight or mix you want.
You tell them what you want and they should accommodate you..

There's an approved list online somewhere that has the approved varieties and which company sells those. It should have diploid and tetraploid on the list. And ranks for all the traits.

Kinda hard to get what your looking for as most grasses will head out at a certain date.

Tipperary mixes are as good as any. The standard mix is No 4 or No 4a. There is a variety without clover too. Usually there is and extra .5kg of grass in each bag that's clover free.

The tipperary mix No 2 is the mix with the high diploid mix. It's mainly for soft ground that needs alot of binding. Not too sure how good it would be for silage tho.

Germinal mix Top5 extend is a real all rounder mix but has a high concentration of Abergain which is a tetraploid which is a fast growing variety but wlll stem and head out quickly if not cut in time.

After all that you could get your own mix made up. Could be expensive tho

A grass by its nature, is trying to go to seed before the longest day of the year.
If going for 2 cuts then you need a silage mix that includes one standing grass, that keeps the sward upright and open. This upright grass will go a bit stemmy but with the sward upright then all the crop will stay green and not go brown at the base. On balance over all the grasses you have a better silage.

Abbergain 6 kg abberchoice 4 kg and Aston energy 4 kg I wouldn’t discount clover and add 1 kg .tgats what I sow .15 kg per acre

Sinclair McGill have some very good grass seed as well. I’ve used their Castle Hill over the past few years and getting very good results. It’s a dual purpose mix, I graze it in the spring, take 3 cuts of silage and get a few grazings at the back end of the year as well. Silage tests consistently come back in mid 70’s for DMD and 17 to 18% protein, super quality silage. The one thing I find with grass seed is don’t spare it when you’re sowing it. Between all the work, spray, fertiliser and seed you’re looking at up to €300 an acre to reseed, an extra few euros worth of seed is irrelevant then and makes all the difference. If it’s recommended to sow between x and y kgs per acre always aim for the higher value and I’d always go a bit more as well.
