Is Eir still shocking?

Was with them years ago, and swore never to go back to them again.

But recently got fibre put into the estate, and Eir's current offer seems pretty good.

€55 per month for 24 months.
    No installation fee.
    No activation fee.
Eir & Virgin Media Sport Pack.
    Amazon Video.

I'm not arsed about the last two, but the rest seems pretty cheap.
Unless they still charge you €100 for installation, but they call it something else?

So does anyone have any recent experience of them and/or their gigabit broadband?
The old modem was a right bag of bolts. Is the new fibre one a better unit?

Am I one of the lucky few?

Our area was enabled for FTTH in Feb 2019. We nervously signed up to Eir at the time and got connected without any hitch on their side. Install took 2 attempts due to blocked ducts initially. First year was near completion and I rang them threatening to move and they matched their year 1 deal for 2nd year.

Supplied router was poor in our experience. Seemed fine for a while until number of wireless clients hit a certain point and we had regular dropped wifi connections. We have numerous smart plugs so this may be the cause. We purchased a TP-Link Archer C7 around 11 months ago and this is working fine. We use Eir for voice calls and have our original router connected to TP-Link using port forwarding in order to maintain the VOIP setup. We have a 300mbps connection and wired speed tests always show 270mbps + anytime I have checked.

My brother in another county had the total opposite experience - lots of to'ing and fro'ing telling him line was not active etc despite obtaining local assurances that all was in order. He cancelled and signed up to Vodafone and there was no issue since.

It sounds like a total lucky dip!

I wouldn't be surprised if someone would go ER because of their incompetence. If you don't want pulling your hair out don't bother with Eircom. Virgin is the best value for money in my experience. They even give you a static IP for free (very long lease so it's practically static).

Ever since 2014 they are sending out modems that brick themselves. Last I had this happen to a new fiber modem.

Do not use Eir if you value your sanity.

They're now adding €50 to your account on top of everything above.

It's starting to get very tempting now.

if you never need to talk to them and are getting simple BB + Phone then you may be alright. (this is what I told myself, I was wrong)

However I was with them for a year up to Dec and have TV with them. if was beyond bad.
The router could not handle the internal traffic. TV was always terrible, shuddering and freezing constantly. I would need to totally reset the boxes multiple times a day. Totally genuinely useless.

I left them when the contract ended in very early december. There continued to bill me 130pm. I received 2 refund checks from them but they still continued to bill me. They suggested I contact the band and cancel the DD to be on the safe side. It's now July, there are still trying to bill me.

EDIT: I was on FTTC not FTTH - but was profiled at 90 megs and always got it - which should have been more than adequate for my needs

Had similar issue with them with FTTC. Router could only handle 15 devices or something paltry like that, and had to reset it pretty much every day.
Luckily I never had an issue with them as such. Just had to move due to the restrictions above.
First thing I did was cancel the DD with the bank, and had no billing issues subsequently.

Sky have been perfect. Reluctant to switch, but Sky are looking for €110 connection fee and €75 per month. Big difference.

I've gone back to sky also. I can't get virgin so only options for sky sports are eir / vodafone etc and they all only broadcast sky sports in SD. I do most of my sports watching on a projector so SD is just not good enough.
Sky costs more money, but fo me that is offset by improvement is stress levels

Agreed that they are beyond frustrating to deal with and very incompetent from a support perspective. Before covid they seemed to outsource a lot of their support teams to india or somewhere but they only have the irish support teams now and therefore 1 hour+ wait times on the phone.

Initially I had 3 engineer call outs and a total of about 5 hours on the phone to their support teams to get broadband working.

I'm also paying for a home phone line I don't use as part of their bundle. When I asked to get out of this bundle on the contract renewal date recently they said they had to cancel everything first and request all new connections. This sent me into a world of dread and panic and begged for them to leave it alone to save the stress. I'm also paying 5 euro extra for a 'hd pack' which nobody on their support team knows the benefit of having. Initially I added it to get BBC in HD, not sure if thats standard now. Again I'm afraid to cancel in case I can't get it back.

Thats said most of the time the broadband and tv works fine, apart from occasional broadband slowness every couple of months which impacts the tv reception.

I am only still with them really because I'm working from home and can't afford the interruption. I also don't want Sky drilling holes in the gable end of my house where the connection box is to bring cables in. Plus there's probably some gaa matches on eir sport in a couple of months.
