Motor tax question

    Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone would have any insight here.
I bought a car from a dealer, its an import and went through VRT yesterday without issue, NCT is next week.

Went online to tax it this morning and there a slight mistake with my name instead of Mr it says Ms (I'd usually laugh at a mistake like that but under a bit of pressure to get this taxed and insured).
Anyway all the details on the VRT receipt are correct so its an issue arising from whatever way it was uploaded into the motor tax system.

I've sent motortax in Shannon an email as they're phone lines aren't operational at the moment due to the current restrictions.

My local motor tax office said wait for a reply from Shannon but suggested it might be possible to go ahead and then request a name change when the log book is sent out, but to hold off and wait for shannon.

Long story short does anyone know if I'd still be able to go ahead and tax it ?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

It will likely result in the new logbook being issued as taxing first time triggers this and probably the incorrect Ms instead of Mr. I'd wait 2 or 3 days and if you hear nothing tax it, at the end of the day it won't result in an extra owner on the logbook if they correct it.

Yeah that's what the dealer reckoned and the local motor tax office said a name change wouldn't affect the extra owner.

Your right if I tax it now I'll get a log book that has ms instead of mr and then I'd have to go through the name change process.

Just annoying how a small error can cause hassle. Usually I'm sure a simple call to Shannon probably would have sorted it and I wouldn't have to worry about the name change process seeing as it's the first time it'll have been taxed. Presuming it'll just take a bit longer for a reply by email.

As far as I'm aware seeing as it's still my name it shouldn't make much difference but would just prefer all the paperwork to be correct especially when it comes to tax.

    Thanks for the reply btw

I wouldn't bother getting it fix if it's only Ms instead of Mr.

Wouldn't affect anything down the line with insurance or if I change the car in a few years ? Everything else appears correct anyway in terms of name and address

I've little knowledge when it comes to motor tax unfortunately

Just wasn't sure if it would effect anything?

no one will ever care, you might need to select Ms when putting in details for tax assuming it asks for prefix and somehow is connected to main registry to pass it off, but once you check out they dont give a middle finger who pays tax nor insurance etc. as non irish had my name surname messed up in more then 100 ways over the years, be it banks etc, as long as its readable its grand, silly mistake who done it, but not worth changing logbook over it.

Somewhere between VRT and tax office made the mistake. All the VRT receipts are fine.

Its actually on the site it doesn't give me the option to change the prefix, literally says ms and my name instead of Mr. All other details are right, name and address. Just the prefix is wrong.

I just wasn't sure if it was linked into insurance at all, if they'd see it for any reason.

Thanks for the reply though. I'll give it until close of business Friday to get a reply from the tax office in shannon and if they change it before I tax it great. If not I'll take it and see what to do then

Sorry for another question but I'm useless with things like this.

As the car was registered yesterday anyone know how long it takes to get a quote from insurers ? Whenever I type in the reg it can't find the car.

Does it take a while for whatever database insurers use to update?

    Thanks

You can get a quote from insurers at any time, even on the UK reg. If the reg doesn't show up manually select the car, or ring them.

It can take a while for their databases to be updated, depends on the particular company.

Also, you need an insurance policy for motor tax, so insurances comes first.

Also, personally I'd wait a week until July to tax, no point paying a full month for June at this stage.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Thanks for that, just wasn't sure how long the databases with insurers take to update or what dbs they even use.

I have the Irish reg, the car dealer sent that over to me yesterday afternoon.

I'll wait a few days so and see when the car comes up on insurers sites, tried a few, AA, Aviva and AXA and not showing up on any of them.

Thanks for the info on the tax, I'll wait until next Wednesday 1st July then. Hopefully by then they'll have the ms issue sorted where as my opening in the thread says they have ms instead of mr infront of my name when I log into the motor tax website.

If you leave it until the 1st July to tax it, you'll still have to pay arrears for June as it was registered in June.

You can declare off the road for 3 months now and tax it on the 1st July as long as you declare it hasn't been driven on a public road.

I'll sort the insurance by the end of the week hopefully and get the tax sorted soon, just the original issue with the prefix before my name has thrown me a bit

My friend bought a used car a few weeks ago off done deal. The log book arrived today and it says Mr. instead of Ms. I wonder is this a problem with the system in Shannon or just a coincidence with the OP?

Just ignore it and tax away. I've had Wrong names, addresses and even incorrect car model listed on logbooks over the years and never an issue.
