Motor tax renewal and insurance policy

My motor tax is due soon, a couple of days after my insurance policy is up. If I pay the motor tax first and the insurance after, should I use the expiry date of the current insurance policy or that of the renewal (e.g. in June 2021)?

    Thanks.

I don't think I've used the right date or policy number ever.

Use your current policy but unless things have changed its not mandatory.

You could put your phone number in if you want.

Why does the motor tax office even ask for your insurance details?

Folks, I've no idea as to why they need it, but I'd rather not lie on an official form.

I eventually got hold of someone in the local motor tax office, they told me to put down whatever insurance policy is in place at the time of the payment, however if I've already paid for the new insurance I should write down the new policy number as that would be in place for most of the duration of the tax disc (square).
