Definition of a receipt

    I was wondering does anyone know of any legislation or case law where a receipt has been defined?
    I have the definition from Murdoch and Hunt where its described "as “a written acknowledgement of money paid or goods received”". I need to know does there have to be a level of formality involved or can the definition of a receipt encompass a written note from a friend acknowledging money paid to them in cash

    " a written note from a friend acknowledging money paid to them in cash" is pretty much the definition of a receipt. Assuming it has the date received, the payer, the payee and the amount you are good to go.
