    Has anyone done this? Was looking at it yesterday, looks like an awkward enough job on an old machine.

    Wear gloves when opening up if you are going inside where the gears are. There are likely to be loads of very sharp metal filings from the gears. Very difficult to get out of your skin. Will also cut you very easily

    The outside bearing. I'm thinking of cutting the housing half way back. The inside of the housing, where the bearing was, looks to be worn, so it might need to be built up and machined down.

    Suspect its no.3 on the diagram you are changing. Though not done one myself, appears the reel has to be dropped to get crownwheel out of the way, then can undo the nut and knock out the input shaft. Not a huge job but definitely time consuming.
