If you are talking about quads they are fine going up and down but going crossways will turn over very easily due to the narrow wheelbase and will throw you off at the lower side and then flick on top of you and you could get hurt if it rolls over you if you are not quick enough to get out of the way.
That being said they will go places that the trooper never would and are great for lots of jobs around the farm.
I dont have any experience with the atvs like the john deere gator or mule etc. but I wouldn't take them on steep hills as you cant get off them easy if the are going to turn over and I would think a quad is a more versatile machine on rough high ground

Just common sense , you have to sit forward when going up a hill and back when going down........ They're very lively and will flip over backwards if your not sitting forward as you accelerate, also the 20 gal sprayers on the back make them unstable.
They'll go anywhere though in four wheel drive

As the others have said, your own body position is important. Wet grass is a lot slippier than you might think.

That yoke Say My Name has looks like a good compromise and a bit safer. Susuki carry i think it is from a crowd in westmeath? Like a miniature 4wd dyna type yoke Tbh if I was looking at something for driving around the farm I wouldn't look at quads as the niece and nephews live on the farm and are mad for it and from a safety point of view I just wouldn't have em around.

It was my father in his 80's spotted this thing for sale a few years ago and decided we had to have a look at it.
He never liked the quad. Not that I ever had an accident but the potential was there and we know people that have been paralyzed by quads.
With the Carry or Quadtruk or whatever you want to call it, the weight is all low down and you have a longer wheelbase than a quad.
I don't use it that much as I'm making use of the legs this weather but when the cows start on the silage ground aftergrass and the weather turns cold and wet and the days get shorter and darker it's used.
With the proper wheels and tyres you'd climb anything. All while listening to the radio, out of the elements, with the heater on. This was a quarter of the price of a new jd gater or utv at the time.

If it has a roll cage and a seatbelt to keep you inside it, it is reasonably safe.

A pajero junior is a cheap alternative to a gator, 4wd and put a set of decent tires on it and it will go anywhere.

Safer more expensive version. Not as agile as the quad. I couldn't trust myself on the quad anyway. Knowing my luck I'd come off it once and that would be my.

Very few of them around, are patrols any good on hills? Are they tough?

I have some very steep hills and a quad and I would not attempt to go onto high ground with an ATV like a gator as a jeep or tractor has a wider wheel base. my quad has gone over a few times usually when going slowly across the hill and not looking where the wheels are going. any dip or stone would flick it but I always managed to jump clear. I would have a fair bit of experience on quads motocross bikes etc. but on high ground like I have anything is dangerous. When the quad would go over it would often flick over several times down the hill before coming to a level spot. The last thing I would want is to be strapped into something like an ATV and tumbling down the hill with it. My honest option would be a quad, jeep, tractor or on foot. anything with a narrow wheelbase and high center of gravity will go over quickly

Currently have a quad here. Looking at upgrading. What are people's opinions on mule/gators. Are they easier to get in out of etc. They hold a few bits at the back. It's just for general use, sometimes towing a small trailer 4ftx4ft. What are the main disadvantages to them. I see they are becoming more popular about the place.
