I must be doing something very wrong here :)
I thought if I put coaxial connectors onto my cable I'd be ok.
But the connection to the aerial seems incorrect.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks m

The aerial has a female f-connector, so the cable should have the male part.

Can you post a pic. showing all of that aerial dipole? It looks like it could be from a VHF aerial.

    Thanks
I ordered a saorview aerial from eBay so thought I was ok.

Is there any way to make it work?

    Thanks m

    It's a UHF aerial, so that's OK.

You'll need to put a connector on the cable. See here.

Replace the co-ax plug with one of these F-connectors, you should be able to pick one locally in a diy shop, Powercity etc. There is a video under one of the tabs to show you how make the connection to the cable.

Ideally the connection should be made watertight using self-amalgamating tape to prevent water ingress

The antenna is a F Connector the TV has the connector in your hand, don't know the name.
You can buy the cables also if you ever had Virgin Media or UPD you probably have an old cable around the house. If you are any way handy you can buy screw on F Connectors and youtube how to fit them

If it's for outdoor use change the cable to a proper f connector, that's probably the wrong cable too.

If it's for indoor use you can just buy a push-on connector but it could slide off, a screw on f connector will be much better:
