    Hi,

Spotted this fella dead under some trees on our property. Think he is a Buzzard.

How should I dispose of it? If it is a Buzzard do need to inform anyone given that they are protected?

You should bury him in the Pet Cemetery!!

This'll sound weird. Seal it in a plastic bag (after taking a photo) and freeze it. Someone somewhere might want to do a post mortem to see if it was poisoned. If I'm wrong, then just bury him. I'd be contacting the birdwatchers ireland first. See what they think.

You might get a reply quicker from the Irish Raptor Study Group than Birdwatch Ireland.

Looks like a Buzzard alright. They are not more protected than most other birds, but there has been such a spate of poisonings in some parts of the country (Cork in particular), that it would be no harm letting local NPWS ranger know, or local Birdwatch branch.

Looks like a Buzzard alright. No need to inform anyone unless you suspect foul play. That being said, no harm in reporting it to the local NPWS Ranger - see link here for the NPWS RAPTOR protocol where raptor persecution is expected (you'll find a relevant email address in one of the reports): https://www.npws.ie/research-projects/animal-species/birds/raptor-protocol#:~:text=The%20RAPTOR%20(Recording%20and%20Addressing,(for%20example%20poisoning%2C%20persecution%2C

If you do suspect poisoning or similar, don't touch it with your bare hands but you may be asked to put it into a clean plastic bag and seal it so it can be sent by NPWS to the regional veterinary office.

It's often secondary poisoning with those fellas

That wasn't a dig at Birdwatch but I just thought the Raptor people probably have less on their plate. :)
