Recently had a herd test here, would be interested in hearing what other counties are paying, in clare myself
The 2 visit cost 70 & then paid 4.36 per animal.
We tested 98 animals, it was a fairly straightforward day, he was done in 2hrs. Very handy money for them

And it’s only reason you have a vet that you can call at 3 in the morning for a section.

Not happy on a few times with my vets last year and considered changing then of course delighted to get them with a calving one night at 3 o clock so impossible to leave a service like that

I don't think the Vet is pocketing the lot, the call out will have VAT added, and the Tuberculin injected will have a cost as well.

I think we are lucky with the vet service in this country. The vet practice has an office to run. A vet's transport must be the most depreciated vehicle in the country.

I was hoping to get an average throughout the country, 4.36 seems very high.

Four hours on your farm, two trips to and from, bit of admin, total six hours.
    GP will see three/four patients per hour at €50. €150 x 6 = €900

Yes, vetinary service is dear, esp on non dairy farms, though at 29c/l, that's not great either. A sick call out can quickly go past €100.

I know a few farmers that have one vet for TB testing and another for regular calls. I think it’s very unfair on the vet that is just doing call outs especially as they’re often the 3 am calving when the least you could do is to give them the herd test too.

A call out might be only €70 euro and they’ve to drive their own car and run an office so they wouldn’t have a lot out of it.

I'm fit to leave mine, have a clean fortune given to them this year. Rang at 11am on a Sunday a few weeks ago to do a section on a cow and they had 1 vet on call between 2 practices covering basically half of County Clare and she was on her way out to a section over an hour away from me when I rang, said she would be 3 hours and to get someone else. They are far from the cheapest and I don't mind that but it's a sh1t service, all their vets are young trainees fresh out of college that get a bit of experience for a year or 2 before they move onto somewhere they will get paid properly, the least they could do is have a vet on call. I gave them a piece of my mind the day after for all the good it did me, calf dead and cow was wobbling around the place for a few days and fell in a flat field then and broke her leg and I had to give them a hundred euro to put her down then.

That’s exactly like the last practice I was with. On call was a joke with 1 vet covering 3 practices (he joined with 2 others for out of hours).

Left him about 8 years ago. New practice is not the cheapest but service is unreal- average wait time for on call is 20 minutes so worth every cent when cows calving.

Well it's only fair I suppose for the vet for testing & regular calls, our old vet passed away and when we ran a new vet, he said he wouldnt call unless we gave him the test, we hadn't lined up anyone so worked out for both of us

Vets are expensive, but if they provied you with a good service then they are worth it. Its €4 ahead with my crew for a test & €50 plus vat for the call out. Had 1 of them out a few weeks back for a twisted calf, she spent the best part of an hour getting the calf right & with injections & all came to €95, I was happy. No problem ever ringing them for advice. They have 6/7 staff in the office who are a fountain of knowledge & are regularly doing courses. But a bad service from a vet would drive you mad, we have been with this crowd since 1974 (well before I was born) but we have heard horror stories about some other places.
