Huge blow to the development of the Mid Shannon Wilderness Park this morning with the granting of permission to install a wind farm on these lands.
Serious implications on the wildlife and rehabilitation works on these lands, not to mention the enormous impact on sustaining jobs.

We need to petition for a refusal on this. Wind power is great but we desperately need wilderness areas for rewilding.

I strongly agree - as did the ABP inspector in this case who pointed out that industrial wind farms are not compatible with bog restoration or the maintainance/enhancement of biodiversity. The bogs in this area are particularly important since they play a vital role in the hydrology of the upper Shannon basin including controlling flooding issues, siltation etc. - all functions that will be seriously compromised if they are sterilised under this white elephant

I agree totally. I wouldn't complain that some of the larger bogs are given over for turbines, as Mount Lucas as has been. That is fine. I just think a few of the best should be set aside for a future national park. These mid Shannon bogs will mostly flood when abandoned and won't be suitable for forestry so I thought they would be safe from turbines.

Insiders at Bord na Mona told me that of the two county councils involved one is not very supportative.
