Temp gauge just left of the halfway mark and car seems to be leaking coolant

    Hi all,

Got a new car early in the year and it seems to be leaking coolant. The temp gauge never gets to half way, always slightly off where it should be and when you use the air con goes down a bit more.

I’ve monitored the coolant level which seems to go down when I’ve used the air con.

Any ideas what it might be?

I’m going to bring it back to the garage but just curious.

    Thanks

    Does it blow hot air?

Does it happen if air con is off? Are you measuring the coolant when engine is fully cooled down when comparing, are you sure it's actually dropping?

Air con when in use will discharge water vapour under the compressor when in use, perfectly normal.

Have you put any coolant into the car and is there a damp patch under where you park? Once there's liquid in the expansion tank and it's not overheating you don't have an issue.

Bare this in mind above all else.

If you havnt been stopping up the coolant then it probably isn't leaking.

Some brands dont usually go right to halfway on the temp gauge and stop a bit before it like Hyundai/ Kia and some Peugeot.

Liquid under car is often just water from air-conditioning and no issue. Check your levels when cold.

Thanks all. Car is a Ford Galaxy. When I got it in Jan it was at the max level. Within a few months of driving very on and off it was down at min level. I topped it up and then it came down to min level again.

I get that little would reduce but it seems a bit much to have to top it up twice like that. And yeah I have seen a leak under the car where it’s been dripping.
