SO I got some work on the car. First was the alternator belt change.

Picked the car up, told an oil needs fixing.

second visit I get the oil filter housing gasket fitted. I had asked them did I need to get a new manifold gasket, told no.

when I pick it up i'm told need a new manifold gasket. He tried a silicon sealant

last visit I get the manifold gasket fitted.

Should I have paid for the last visit after I already asked if I need a gasket and he told me no need for a new one, than to turn around and tell me I do need one

He tried to fix it with silicone sealant to save the price and labour of a new gasket. The sealant didn't work. You will require a new gasket

There is no gun to your head . You dont have to get the gasket done or by him. Tis your car.

3 seperate repairs and he tried to shortcut one of them to help you. I wouldn't be hugely impressed with the use of silicone but hey...

And an oil filter housing seal is cheaper than a manifold gasket I'm guessing so he started with the easier/cheaper repair. On running the engine after fitting the housing he realised the manifold gasket is leaking and informed you of such.

So yes, you need to pay for all 3 repairs

The only thing they are guilty of in my book is not calling you during the work to save you a trip. Otherwise, it does seem like they started with a cheaper/easier repair and moved up as the problems manifested.

What I would do though is make it clear if you have to go back again, that they do call you in the future if they think more work might be needed.

Well the manifold needed to removed to get them oil filter housing out. I asked him if he wanted a gasket when I went to the mean dealers for hosing gasket.

Both gaskets were close to the same price

I should have known the old manifold gasket wouldn't work

They should have called you as they went, and told you more needed doing, and asked for the go ahead. Just done it all in one job rather than you having to go back.

Ya I would have preferred it that way
