Previous Job - Start and End Dates

    I notice some applications, when asking for references for jobs, will ask for the start and end dates of the respective job. So far I have just used the literal day that I started and finished at that job but now I am thinking should I use the dates set out in the contract for the job and when I was officially taken off the payroll?

    I suppose I am wondering how exact do the dates need to be? Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply. In the application I am on at the moment, it is asking for the day as well. My worry is, in the event that I get to this stage, the referee will be contacted and asked to confirm these dates and it wont look well if it is not accurate. I realize I may be overthinking though.

    Personally, I can’t remember the exact dates I started a job 5 or 6 years ago. I had one application form say this and just gave the 1st and 31st of the month.

    Thanks for the reply. I was having a look at my contract for the old job and the end date is months longer than the actual last day I finished the job. Like I could have worked until the date stated on the contract but I didn't if that makes sense?

    So for the end date, would I use the date I actually finished, or when my contract of employment finished?

    I would put the date you actually finished working there (not the contract date).

    I usually go with the first Monday of the month started and last Friday of the month as end date

    I think you're overthinking this a bit.

    If HR rang the company and were told "Eh... let me see... he started on 12 June 2009 and finished 15 September 2011" and your CV says 9 June 2009 and 14 September 2011, HR will think you started early or ended early or something. They won't be thinking this guys pretending he has an extra 2 days experience!
