Tiviar Alpha Plus Combo Vs Zgemma H7s?

    Hey all I'm looking for some advice please. I have a Humax 1000s and a Humax 1010s Freesat STB. The 1010s is now dead and I'm looking for a replacement. I'm moving towards a combo box as I'd like to get the integrated saorview EPG. It'll need to allow an internal hard disk to be installed.

    The Tiviar is out for the last couple of years I believe and is older tech - possibly too old at this stage? There is a huge support thread on here and The high horse brigade's images seem great. It seems like a very stable device.

    The Zgemma is the newer machine which I know little about but believe it performs well.

    I think I'm torn between the stability of the Tiviar and the 'newness' of the Zgemma:confused:

    Any recommendations are greatly appreciated:pac::pac::pac:

    I have the zgemma, it's rock solid and I can't fault it. Perfectly stable too.

    How is the support for images? Is the device user-friendly, I don't mind tinkering a little but I'd like to get it setup with everything working - series link recording, saorview and sat epg together, 7 day EPG. For the sake of a quiet life it's got to be wife friendy too:D

    In terms of software, the two boxes are almost the same. They both run the Enigma2 operating system (of which OpenATV, OpenVix are essentially different flavours). In mobile terms, it's like having 2 phones from different manufacturers, but both run Android.

    As you said, the Tiviar is getting on a bit now. However, it is still a great box, and the best thing it has going for it is the community here on Boards. Because of that community (THHB and NewClareman in particular), the Tiviar will probably be easier to set-up - you can just grab the latest backup from on here, stick it onto the box, and most things will be set up for you.

    What the H7S has going for it, is that it's a new box with a faster processor, and as a result it can show 4k (which the Tiviar can't). Granted, there isn't much/ any free 4k content at the mo (bar some test channels), but if you're thinking of the long term, this could be a factor. Also, while the H7S doesn't have as big a community here, it is growing. There's no downloadable backups (yet), but people should be able to help you if you get stuck.

    I have it set up using pure2, and it has series link, combined EPG if you want (I keep them in separate bouquets) and the full EPG. All very straightforward to set up too.

    Brilliant advice thanks Schorpio, gives me plenty to think about!
