Gaming PC Build Help €1500

Looking for some help on a gaming build, I'm mainly a console gamer and have been putting off this build for a long time as it just wasn't necessary. I have a 6 year old Asus desktop that I use but now that I'm working from home this is just not up to the task and therefore has rushed through my need for a new machine.

1. What is your budget? €1500

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Work/Gaming/Video editing/Internet. Sim racing with triple screen, FPS and latest single player games.

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? No

That's crazy unbalanced and €310 is madness for a 5500XT.

3600 non-X is good bit cheaper. X570 is unnecessary - for the same price you could get a vastly superior B450M + 3700X combo for example.

On that budget a 5500XT is a bad pick, should be looking at 5700XT.

Yeah I really just had a look through the forum here and then tried to set out a budget, my knowledge of the actual pros and cons on the items is non existant. I've also picked a full size tower and not sure if this is required, I'm not stuck for space and can accommodate the larger form factor but only if it's correct choice to make.

After a bit more research, I'm fairly settled on the below unless there is anything glaringly out of place, the option of picking up a 2070 Super is also being considered. Thanks for the pointers earlier, very helpful.

2070 super would be a smarter buy for 60 more, 5700xt wont age as well imo

Well, there's nothing wrong with it, but ask yourself why the B550M - is there a good logical reason to drop £200 on the board?

People say things like "it'll support all 4th gen Ryzen so it's future proof" but being realistic, by the time a 3700X is obsolete, so will all 4th Gen Ryzen processors.

By getting a decent B450M you've already covered the cost of an RTX2070 Super for example.

Also that SSD is not NVME. If you're going to get a b550 board you might as well not waste an m.2 slot on a slow non nvme ssd.

That 5700xt seems quite expensive too.

I suppose the main reason I chose the B550 was because of the futureproofing as mentioned but I see the valid point against it. Also including NVME influenced my decision but on further thought this is not something I will get the full benefit of, it is a sexy board though and that means something but not enough to drop it in favour of the B450 and spend that extra on the gpu. Again, all input appreciated.

If you are planning to run triple screens for some of your games then I'd buy the best graphics card you can afford to keep fps as high as possible. Not sure the 3700X will give you a proformance boost over the 3600 more than spending the extra €100+ on graphics card would

Disagree on the 2070 Super. 5700XT is much better value - Red Devil is £399 and only slightly less performance than a 2070 Super. Turing is going to age very poorly indeed if the rumours are true. The only thing the 2070 Super has in it's favour is DLSS which in fairness could be a game changer down the road. I'd be banking the £100+ for a new GPU personally.

Edit: Ballistixx (spelling?) 3600 CL 16 Kit is £89.99 on amazon and a bit of a better die than the Corsair stuff.

If you do go for the 2070 Super, maybe go for the 3x edition for the 3 fans, from all the reviews and comparison sites I've read on it recently, it seems to perform and cool slightly better.

Also I'm kinda bias on nvidia cards over amd, I've just had a bad history on amd gfx drivers performing poorly on certain games. Nvidia drivers just always seemed more stable overall. Maybe they're better these days but I've a long memory on that front.

I would go with 2070 super due to 3 reasons.

It's about 10% faster and imo €50-100 is worth for that much of performance gap.

Second even if ray tracing is only supported by small number of games right now, in 1-2 years or so it will probably be much more wide spread because of the consoles.

3rd if you decide to sell your card at that time for an upgrade, 2070 super will have a much better second hand market compared to a card that doesn’t have hardware accelerated RT.

It won't matter if it's more wide spread imo. Most of the 20 series cards won't be up the task without seriously bottlenecking the rest of the card.

The next gen of cards is going to be at least 4 times better at it.

I'd cheap out on a gpu now and get a next gen card when they arrive. That's what I did getting a 5700.

Who knows. Next gen 2060/2070 equivalents will have better ray tracing ability than a 2080ti though. Who knows what AMD have up their sleeve in that area either. But you are right, consoles will dictate that. They will be targeting 30 - 60 fps in most cases though. PC is going to be at least double that. There's also quality settings for RT which can be bumped up or down for each platform.

Gonna stick with the Ryzen 7, B450 Tomahawk & add an RTX2070 Super, stock levels permitting! My head is melted from all the new bxr9000 talk, I've watched a lot of youtube for the last few days and I'll be glad of the break after shopping has been completed.

I've decided to reuse an existing SSD and save a few quid on the case and that's an acceptable outlay for me. Good point about new gpu tech coming but I think what's available right now fits my requirements and budget. I may consider a 1440 monitor at the right price point and then hopefully add some 4k tech in 2021.

2070 Super is the absolute max I would recommend spending, in general.
The 2080 lineup is too far past the diminishing-returns curve IMHO

Probably want to change to a WiFi board and add more storage. Pity there aren't more GPU options.

I really regret ordering my upgrades from amazon so far on that note, I ordered everything a week ago and most of the amazon parts still not expected to arrive for another week.

Thanks for all the help, machine is up and running.

Had to return the first motherboard to CCL as it had a sticky residue covering most of the underside of the board and a few bent pins, still waiting to hear back from them but discussed it with them before return and they said there shouldn't be any problems with a refund, I ordered another from them so I wouldn't have to wait.

Entered the bios to adjust the ram, it had 2 profiles under xmp that were identical so just selected the first but also went ahead and manually selected the frequency as DDR4-3200 and set the voltage as shown on the ram label, hope this is all okay.



Slighty concerned with the sag of the gpu to be honest but after some reading this seems par for the course. Think I may add some cable extensions next just to be extra clean.

Thanks man, twas the group knowledge of the users here that put it together.

Really easy and enjoyable to build and I definitely learned a thing or two so that's an added bonus. I also have the LG screen from the bargains thread arriving tomorrow so that blew the budget wide open but now very much looking forward to Cyberpunk.

Personally, i'd just select one of the XMP profiles and leave the Voltage for that profile to Auto.
