I have been given (don't ask me why and how) and 2017 iMac that is locked.
When booting up it shows a message that the device is "locked by materials management".
Is there a way to remove this? Can I install a fresh OS?
And before people start making insinuations the device was originally purchased in a bankruptcy auction.

Apple will remove activation lock if you can provide proof of purchase. You may need to contact who you bought it from either for the original receipt or for them to disable activation lock.

How long ago did you buy it?

As said, it was purchased in a bankruptcy auction by someone who later gave it to me. Getting the original proof of purchase is not an option.

If it is Activation Lock then you are probably out of luck. But try doing a clean install.
