As above, if anyone has a spare they want to sell, don't want to have to pay a tenner shipping to bike24, and don't want to wait 18 months from China

    Thanks in advance, folks

Im nearly sure I have one in either my spares drawer or toolbox! I never use it since I bought the BBB tool with the handle.

I’ll take a look for it and check it’s in working order when I’m back home tomorrow and let you know.

You can have it for nothing if you just want to cover the postage (it’s only tiny so even that won’t be much)

Thanks very much deano, but if you can find it, I'd like to throw you something for it

Halfords sell the nut, which you operate with a regular 24mm socket spanner. Easiest and cheapest way to acquire the "lock nut removal tool" :)

Just make sure you get the right nut - they're different between Shimano/SRAM and Campag. I think I paid 4.99 for it.

Halfords was the first place I tried, but neither of my closest Halfords are open.

I've obviously misnamed the object I'm looking for

No, you have used the correct name alright. I am not sure what a “lock nut removal tool” is though!

Here’s a Lockring remover on eBay:

You’ll need a chainwhip too, to hold the cassette while you turn the Lockring. Here’s both together:

    Thanks letape.

I have a chain whip, and I actually have a freewheel tool that looks very similar to the link you sent, but it doesnt fit over the nut on the axle to allow me to engge it on the splines on the lockring. Are they two different things then, could I expect the one in your link to fit the lockring properly?

The one in the link should work - assume it’s designed properly.

The better one is the BBB type one that has a comfortable grip handle on it - the Shimano version one is out of stock in chainreactions and wiggle but merlincycles have them for a reasonable price. That’s what I would buy and what I have myself. Very easy to use.

If you are anywhere near Greystones you can borrow mine.

Sorry for the hijack but do you need a chain-whip to swap a cassette?

Thanks for both the help and the offer. Not close enough to take you up on it, but that just means I have to buy a new tool

Yes you do because you have to hold the cassette steady while you apply pressure to the lock nut. Otherwise the cassette just spins in the same direction you are trying to turn the lock nut.

Had a look around and can't find it tonight! I doubt I threw it out. Will have a better look on friday when I have more time and give you a shout if I track it down.

I have one somewhere as well, yours for free if I can find it. I have a BBB one with the handle so no need for the two of them

Perhaps I'm misreading this but you are removing the axle from the wheel before you put on the tool right. :D

From what I can see online, I shouldn't need to. The qr skewer is out, but I think I should be able to put the removal tool on over the top of the lock nut for the cone. In fact, some of the tools come with a guide to sit in the axle to keep the tool straight.

Thanks for all the offers of help (and free tools), but if anyone does have a spare one, I'm happy to pay for it. Just pm me, and I'll sort out an address and PayPal etc

Ah yeah the skewer I meant confusing car terminology. I had axle tube in my head. Yeah should go on over the whole lot its odd that yours doesnt work? Is it miles off they're fairly standard sizing.
