Road resurfacing

    Hi

    A road near to me has recently been resurfaced / new chippings.

    I notice in sections that they have dug in to the ditch every 50 yards or so. What is the reason behind this?

    To allow water escape.

    We used to call them 'water cuts' and as other poster has said they are to allow water draining to each side of the road to flow ino the grass margin or at least to drain from the road surfacing.
    They should be done and maintained throughout the year.

    And also where did water escape before the resurfacing and ditch work.
