Question is in the title. I'm due to start meetings with a private pscyatrist and was wondering on average how many sessions does it take to diagnose you? I know everyone is different but does anyone have any experience with them? What's the format like? I have been to psychologist and counsellors. What is different about them?

I don't know re the length of time. You may be asked about things such as your mood, sleep, relationships, thoughts and so forth.

    Hi Whitecar,

The length of time will depend on the psychiatrist, the difference between one and a psychologist /counsellor is the Psychiatrist is a medical Dr. who specialised in mental health. They can prescribe medication and diagnose.

Afaik, a psychologist may offer a formulation instead of a diagnosis but it depends on the type of psychologist. Both would do assessments etc but a psychologist may say a,b and c happened to John Doe and so he feels x,y and z and this has caused him to be..... Both professions vary in how they specialise, some with children, some with intellectual disability or some with adult mental health.
A counsellor doesn't diagnose but there are various types of counselling (like a lot of types) and counselling psychology, what really matters is how well you connect with the person.

Many of the professions overlap in terms of talk therapy but some can vary greatly in their philosophy/ideas around mental health.

Remember the best expert about you is usually you. We all need help to get there at times. Best wishes.
