Spare car (car parked up)

I have a 2008 Mondeo parked up in the garden the last few weeks.
The Mondeo was my daily until I bought a new car.
I was gonna sell the Mondeo but given the money they're selling for I was considering keeping it as a 'spare' car, which could come in handy.
Would anyone have tips to keep the car fresh? as in keeping the car from becoming damaged or rusted due to spending most of the time lying up?

Parked up in the garden is not a great long term storage idea for a car.
Try to get a place in a shed or garage or else consider selling for what you can get.

Short term disconnect the battery or it will go flat. If you have a trickle charger use that.
Give the car a run every 3-4 weeks.

Have you considered NCT / Insurance ?

If you look at what it would cost you to keep the Mondeo sitting there, but ready to be used as a 'spare car' when you want it....

....then compare that to just buying anything with some NCT from Done Deal if you're stuck.
Just get rid of it. It will only be an unnecessary waste of money to keep it ready for the road.

edit: I know you asked for 'Tips to keep the Car fresh'. There are plenty of things a person could do to achieve this. But in your case it just does not make sense.

One thing to note when keeping a spare car is that you may not be able to transfer your existing insurance temporarily over to it when you want to use it, as insurance companies may not cover a second car registered to you temporarily. The Mondeo doesn't qualify as a classic so a classic policy wouldn't work either.

Given it will be kept outside in the elements and rarely used I'd just sell it, keeping it is more hassle than it's worth.

I bought a car as a summer car last year, used it for a couple of months and it spent more or less the last year sitting outside my house and I was also keeping it with the "spare car" idea, but between either declaring it off the road and then having to tax it for 3 months just to use it even for a day or two, swapping insurance over and keeping a yearly NCT done, I decided to move it on, as there are any amount of very cheap cars on Donedeal to get me out of a corner should I find myself there.

I also reckon you should move it on. It's really more hassle than it's worth to be honest
