SSD for PS4

I've preordered Last of Us 2 for PS4 but I dont have much storage left on my original HD so I'm thinking of upgrading to a SSD.

Any recommendations for a new drive? I'm looking at the Samsung SSD Evo Sata 3 1TB on Amazon for around €130. Is there better value out there? mymemory.ie has other drives like WD for around €140.

I'm also going to buy the PS5 when released before Christmas so would I be better off buying an external drive.

    Thanks for any opinions.

Don't know much about ssd or what you'll need to extend ps5 memory, but I got one of these 4TB external drives for ps4 about 2 years ago. Only 100 quid at the time, money well spelt, highly recommend.

Was that SSD or HD and was it external or a swap for the original HD that came with the original PS4?

1 TB SSD should be plenty for me. I'd probably rather just swap to a Internal SSD.

It was an external HD sorry

    No bother, thanks anyway.

Someone correct if I'm wrong here. An SSD will decrease loading times but since the PS4 is not optimised for an SSD there is little point in paying for a fast SSD like the EVO.
The Samsung 860 QVO 1 TB is cheaper and should give the same performance result.

I've watched a couple of vids that guys recorded the speed difference between the two drives in separate ps4's and there was faster load times in the ssd.

"The benefits you'll get from using an SSD in PS4 are: The boot-up, sleep, and wake up processes of PS4 system will be noticeably faster with an SSD. As for an SSHD, it only offers faster boot-up time here, nothing else. An SSD in general is the most reliable storage device."

Yes the SSD has faster load times there is no doubt about that.
What I'm saying is that these is no difference between a cheap SSD and an expensive SSD in a PS4. I don't see the point in spending more than the price of something like the Samsung 860 QVO 1 TB.

I went for the QVO in the end @ €109.

The extra TB would've came in handy alright.

    Similar price too.

I definitely noticed a difference in load times since upgrading the internal to an SSD. Nothing crazy faster, but noticeably faster.

Re: External drive so you can use it on PS5, I'd be wary as i'm pretty sure the PS5 will only support SSD's similar to their own, so most likely an SSD today won't be supported on the PS5. Just a feeling.

If it's just space, get a cheap external HDD. If you want faster loading, upgrade the internal to an SSD. Just my 2 cents!

Games will need to run from an M.2 NVMe SSD, there will be an install port on the PS5 to expand storage capacity.
Drives will have to be at least as fast as the drive that comes with the console so I believe Sony will compile a compatibility list.

Nobody reads compatibility lists. There is potential for a nice earner for Sony to have an OEM only external drive. My guess is base price of PS5 will stay relatively low at 600 but the peripherals will be the claw back on cost. Chargers, headsets, drives, another VR system etc. All this tech is developed already with the PS4 but if you lock the PS5 to the new stuff, you get a captive market.

The USB port will not have enough bandwidth so external drives will not work.
It's going to be installed into a port that accept M.2.
Sony will have make it clear you need a NMVe M.2 as an SATA M.2 probably won't be fast enough either.

What will probably happen is the companies that make compatible drives will put a PS5 compatible sticker on the box.
