Underground ducting

I've to run underground ducting though the field to a new build. Can't have a pole beside the house. Don't really want one there either to be honest.
It's about 250 metres of a run, possibly more - can't remember exactly.
Esb have advised that due to the length, I need to go with a 5 inch duct instead of a 3 inch.
It will be 3 ft down.

I can either go by the roll or by the pipe. The roll would be serious work to handle, I can picture the chaos!
The lenghts would be easier I'd imagine,
    Any thoughts?

Pipes are 6m lengths, probably make life a lot easier to lay them, then rope as you go.

Has the ESB ducting to be red and marked ESB, I would imagine so. That will be fairly expensive. Can a new pole not be put in to reduce the length of dig. 250m is a fair length to go.

Go with the lengths of pipe, ring spanner tied to the rope through each length before connecting, .9 of a meter deep, can't remember what depth for the tape. Was on a job years ago, commercial unit extended, the ESB wouldn't pull new cable in old ducting because old cable was still there, wouldn't disconnect the old cable for us to remove, had to dig up 50 meters of new public path, cross road and a further 20 meters of other path, we were not flavour of the month in town that year.

It's private land so red duct I think they said. They sent a spec. Esb tape on top of the pipe
    .

Think the tape needs to be 6" above ducting, to warn before hitting.

I know someone who recently had to put in ducting to a new pole for a house connection. It was esb ducting on a roll probably 2-3inches in diameter. That 6m length 5" ducting is probably e20 to e25 per length. If is only for a house, farmyard etc, a small duct would be better. It's not for a commercial premises with larger cable requirements. If you have the ducting roped they will pull through. They have all the gizmos. I would be getting back to them before forking out big money.

Recently did ducting for fiber optic - 100 meter.
It was 2'', maybe 3'' continuous roll of pipe.
Used a compressor to blow temporary electric fence cord through.
Tie a small plastic shopping bag to the cord and into the pipe.
Compressor blew it through in seconds. Cord is easily strong enough for the pull and you can use it again!

I know its not exactly the same but 5'' pipe seems a bit much?

Incidentally, the ESB is a red 2'' duct to the back of the house (can see it in the meter box).

The red 2”duct is normal, I’d usually tie a bit of cloth into a good strong builders line and suck it through with a Hoover.

Lengths would be a lot easier to work with

They say dial before you dig ! maybe that's gas ? either way think carefully on this before you do dig.
250 metres is a serious distance for ducting 5 inch pipe.have a rethink regarding the pole. Is there no existing hedge nearby you can discreetly nestle it in or at least close too.

agree with you not wanting it on site so to speak. often ruins a otherwise nice site

    250m is nuts.
Can you.not the esb rep on site and discuss. Usually fairly good here and only too eager to pole.
I new pole Is surely an option.

It would take 3 poles overground. Pole every 80 meters.

Possibly but plenty scenarios where undedground has to go in one direction while a single pole from another direction could get you nearer.
Ive never seen 250m ducted for any connection ive been involved with and i dealt with a good number of one off rural houses.

Go for the lengths rather than the roll. And either bring the rope with you or blow with the compressor afterwards. If its not a green field make sure and check for existing services using a cat & Genny.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions. Id be dealing with that type of work every day

Vacuum cleaner works as well as a compressor to suck a bag through for a line.
I had a 130m run and used a vacuum and some thin braid, the line was pulled through in seconds.

    On a 5 inch pipe???

Might have to get the slurry tanker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,907 ✭✭✭✭CJhaughey

How much air do you think a vacuum moves? I would guess unless you had a mighty big air tank the vacuum would move more air albeit a lot lower pressure than a compressed air tank would in a 5" pipe.
    130m x 11 litres =1430 litres
My vac says 38litres per second.
    37 seconds total.

Think I'll use the spanner and rope options!

Leaf blower with a bag is best ive seen used when you dont have a big compressor handy
