Ikea Frustrtaion

So back in late March/Early April, we ordered a number of things from Ikea and were given a delivery date of June 8th. Fair enough, we decided we'd order and no issue to wait it out.

Fast forward to yesterday, I received the text telling me delivery would happen between 9am - 1pm . Anyways long story short, no one showed up.

Contacted Ikea this morning and they told me "oh really sorry no one contacted you but your delivery is held up as an item is out of stock in your list, we will reschedule the delivery for July 21st".

When I asked if the exact same thing could happen again without anyone bothering to tell me, he said "yeah I can understand your concern here, we can do a refund".

Still pissed at how bad the whole experience was. So my question, can anyone recommend alternatives to Ikea? Moved into a new house recently so its for some stuff like bed side lockers, coffee table, tv stand, mirrors etc. 13 items in total we ordered. Its annoying that they are probably the best value around but I cant get over how bad they handled all this with zero communication having placed the order back in March/April.

I looked at "man with a van" options but not even confident that will work too well. Im based in Co. Galway if that helps.

With Ikea is the only option really to visit the store yourself?

Get the refund and reorder the items that are in stock.

Personally I've always took the time off work to travel to IKEA and collect everything myself with minimal staff communication,
It is ofcourse a huge company which is aimed at providing everything to the customer with minimal cost; as result the majority of staff don't really care much about customer service as they will get paid the same wage either way and the items will continue to sell, much like LaptopsDirect and sports direct, great value to the customers but almost zero training or care towards the staff.
Ultimately though it's you and the item in your home; there irrelevant to your goals too.

Checking stock in store via there website online; only guarantees every hour; if like me your more than an hours drive away then it's not much use to you neither; they do have a click & collect service but personally I prefer to get everything myself as I wont select a damaged box where a member of staff would be encouraged to.

    I've used alot of IKEA items in my home improvement thread particularly on page 4 of the thread;
My thread may be of interest to view since your currently starting your own home might get some ideas:

I've used click & collect a few times and always found it to be fine. Don't see the harm of a box being damaged so long as the goods inside are still in good nick. And if a box looks seriously dodgy, you can always ask for a different one anyway.

But to answer OP - yes, I reckon your best bet is to go yourself, and use click & collect. Don't know where exactly you are in Galway but I do realise it's likely to be a round trip of five or six hours or even more. But even at that, it's bascially either click for collect and then drive so you have the items in a few hours, or click for delivery and maybe get the items in a few months. I know which one I prefer to do.

I have also had poor experience with IKEA. I ordered some items and then realised i don't need some of them. When i contacted ikea for returns they directed me to a site in UK. Nearest collection point is in UK. I am in cork and can't go to Dublin to return minor items. Consumers in IReland really get a raw deal.
Have put in a similar request with Jysk will see how that goes. They have at least said that they will collect the itmes.

OP you may consider ordering from Jysk. I realised that Jysk items are much easier to assemble. The screws etc are labeled 1,2,3 and parts are labeled A,B, C etc. so cant go wrong in assembly, as opposed to ikea screw 1085562 and part 1324658 etc.
Jysk also have more stores around ireland.

A woman in work (when we used to be able to go to work!) was talking about Jsyk in Waterford one day all right, and saying how great it is (we're in Wexford ourselves, so it wouldn't be far).

Am dreading my wife finding out about it. IKEA is just far enough away from us for me to usually be able to convince her that click & collect is the way to go, and there's no point in her travelling all the way there and back as well. If she ever decides we should go to Jsyk in Waterford together instead, God only knows when I'll ever get out of it.........

We ordered a load of stuff from Hegartys in Buncrana, delivered to Meath for free due to volume of the order. We also ordered stuff from The Range in Derry as they have a lot more variety of stock than the ones down here, they delivered for around £100
    Hope this helps!

I dunno how big the Jysk in Waterford is but the one is Naas is pretty small, you would walk around it in less than 10 minutes. Its nowhere near as big as Ikea and only has a small fraction of their product range.

Thanks. You might just have headed off an argument in our house sometime! :)

A shopping trip still won't be my idea of a good day out, but I don't mind nearly so much if she might be in and out relatively quickly, compared to the mental endurance test of traipsing around IKEA.

Ikea online is ordered via UK ikea, we had several failed deliveries from them when we first moved and it was very frustrating.

We had to cancel our order and go to Carraickmines ikea to order with them, they deliver through the Dublin store so and usually deliver in 2 days, only what's available in Dublin at the time, but we found it at less hassle.

I'm not sure about phone orders from Carraickmines and I'm not sure and delivery times but is definitely try them off you're ordering bulky item! (I've had no issue with small items for IKEA online /UK)

Yeah well I can imagine that if you dont like shopping then a trip to Ikea would be like some kind of living hell. Especially on weekends when it is absolutely mobbed. As a rule I only ever go off peak times like Mondays and Tuesdays and even then its not for browsing, I know exactly what I want, where it is and it is a in and out job in 15 minutes by using the shortcuts throughout the store.
