Driving a newly purchased used car that is not taxed

Hi all - sorry may be an obvious question but I bought a used car from a car dealer on Friday (todays Monday). Car isnt taxed and I drove away from the garage with no tax disc on it, and I didnt think I could drive it on the road until I got one.

I thought I was supposed to get a form RF100 from the dealer with which I would pay the road tax, but he's telling me I have to wait until I get the log book from Shannon in my name. Hes saying I should get that in the post by next Monday and then I can pay the road tax and get the disc, which may be 2 weeks after I paid for the car and drove it away...

The dealers saying this is normal practice and that Im allowed drive the car without a disc for up to 10 days after purchase - thats not mentioned anywhere I can see online though... ?

Is this just a COVID-19 thing? Normally a dealer would have it taxed but they havent been bothering the last 3 months?

Yes, you are not allowed to drive an untaxed car on public roads.
No, there is no grace period for 10 days.

For taxing online try this https://www.motarviews.ie/forgot-pin-ui/faces/getDetails.jspx?lang=en The car must be in your name.

It's normal for dealers to let tax lapse as they don't know when the car will be sold. Some will tax it for you when sale is agreed, some will not.

You can't tax until it's in your name. If you keep an eye on change of vehicle ownership on motortax.ie it will show when ownership changed and new document issued.

Many Dealers can do the transfer online, and it would show up almost immediately.
In your case it seems this particular Dealer does not have the authority to do this. Once the transfer of ownership occurs (as said you will see this online) you can then apply for a PIN number (you get this straight away) and tax it online.
Once you have done this the car is taxed (and will show up on the Garda system as such). You should get the new disc within 2 days.

BTW, despite operating with a skeleton crew, they must not be too busy in Shannon. 3 vehicles transferred during the Lockdown and all transferred within 2 days of posting the VLC's.
