Customs Officer Job

Does anyone here have any experience of working in customs? I recently applied for a job in Revenue (AO in Audit and Compliance) and am interested in the role mainly because I'd like to move to customs as soon as I can. I've read everything I can find on the topic but am hoping someone might have some more information.

How long do you have to work in Revenue before you can move to customs? I thought it would be once you finish probation but have seen someone mention 2/3 years in another thread here.
Do you get much choice over where you would be working? As I don't drive so wouldn't be completely flexible in that regard.
What's the job like on a day to day basis? The shift patterns??

Appreciate any input people might have.

There is different sections in customs, what in customs interests you? What location would you prefer?

Most but not all positions in Customs are what they call allowanced posts, these are filled via internal and interdepartmental panel competitions. They run on 5 year contracts and you have to reapply and get a new contract the same way as everyone else is applying.

Apply for every competition as they come up because it take a time to go from application to offer. It is worth applying even on probation as the restrictions have been relaxed some what.

While having a full licence is a requirement for some positions, not all customs roles require driving but it does help to have.
