Advice Needed: Honda Civic 2014 i-dtec or BMW 316d

    Hi everyone,

I am in a bit of dilemma and I would really appreciate if someone could help me decide a car.

I owned a Honda Civic 2007 1.8 which recently got into accident. I am looking to get a car around 8000 now.

After looking at different cars, I am stuck between BMW 316D, 2013 with around 50k miles. I doubts the mileage to be honest on this one but it seems to be in great shape and has leather interiors which is a plus. I haven't yet viewed the car. There is another year of NCT. I also know that 316 are not the fastest. :)

Another one I recently viewed is a Honda Civic 2014 1.6 i-dtec, around 90k kms but was Category D and had repaired front bumpers, hood and headlights. The seller provided an engineering report as well as cartel report and the car looked and drove fine. Its good spec wise but I miss the leather seats of my previous Civic. Nct in the car is due in November this year.

I am planning to keep it for two years at least and will be using for pleasure mainly. I previously had two diesel fords before civic which gave me a lot of trouble so I am looking for reliability however I understand there will be general wear and tear expenses which I am fine with.

Any suggestion, views, recommendations would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

How did you arrive at these two models? They are poles apart in both size and running costs.

Also with an ample supply of Civic diesels for sale out there why have you settled on a Cat D example? Cheap price?

Yeah, I know. Just wanted a car around my budget and I came across them. I prefer Hondas because of its reliability but always wanted to ride a BMW. The last three years have been great with over 40k kms with the Honda.

I didn't know it was a Cat D until I went to view yesterday. The guy told me about it being hit on Bumper and it got repaired.

The price, yes, was the factor. There are only few with less than 100k miles on car, 2013 or later.

40k km over 3 years? Why are you even bothering looking at diesel cars, it sounds like you don't need one?

Not really, though I would prefer the cost savings on tax as well as fuel when going for long drives. I had a look into 1.4 civic as well but read that they are the bit slow. On top of that, they were pricey and low speced.

I think your logic/reasoning is a bit flawed to be honest.

Your driving less than 10k km per year, why are fuel savings on that usage playing such a vital part of your buying decision? Same with the tax as the difference is tiny in the overall scheme of things. How much do you think you are going to save in fuel and tax given your low mileage? I also don't see a 1.4 Civic being too slow when your looking at a 316d. There is also a 1.8 litre petrol Civic btw.

Hmm.. Just influenced by people about the diesel mileage and stuff. I thought it would be good to go for.

Couldn't find 1.8 Civic for a good price. Would you suggest any alternative for the budget?
