Apart from Spain, where in the EU fits this criteria ...

Random check there on Sky Scanner app of one way flights to Greece, Florence and Portugal. None of them at the bargain prices they should be in the middle of a pandemic. Feels like they're double what they should be given the state of the tourism industry

Apart from Spain, where in the EU is:
    • warm/hot
    • budget friendly without needing shared dorms in hostels
    • open to Ireland already or will be in the next 4 weeks

While technically Spain, as you mentioned flight costs, Menorca has some pretty reasonable flight prices for next month

If you like dirty little islands full of car traffic, yes.

Have a look at the south of France: Carcasonne, Toulousse, Lourdes. Nice and Marseille are generally not too expensive to fly to but accommodation will be.

The problem is you have just made up the assumption that the current scenario should mean cheap flights. It appears to be based on nothing but your desire for a cheap holiday.

There is nothing in the current situation that is likely to make travel or tourism cheap.

    Gozo in Malta looks beautiful

I'm all France'd and Spain'd out, I meant to also mention France in my OP

    I don't holiday, I travel long term

And it's based on pretty basic economic thinking and logic. Any other industry on it's knees would be having a firesale right now

Gozo is gorgeous as is Malta itself.
Contrary to a previous comment in this thread-

If you like dirty little islands full of car traffic

The people are extremely friendly and it offers fantastic value for money. We stayed in Valletta and used the buses and ferries to get around.
    I’d highly recommend it.

Malta is a great spot for a holiday, the weathers great, some historic sites, in Valletta the streets are full of restaurants, and some bars also... Boat trips all over the place, make sure to go to Gozo...

it's not "Bangers Mash n' Brits" with cheap booze like a lot of places in the Med.

Not sure what it will be like in this Covid period, may be less tourists so that's another postive...

"I don't holiday, I travel long term". Please do go away for a long time to somewhere with really bad internet.

Perhaps Bulgaria, not sure if they are letting Irish in but would definitely meet a budget holiday criteria

No need for the sniping. I don't get anything out of the cliched "2 weeks by the pool/beach in one location" type travel and haven't for years now

    Each to their own

    Thanks. Love the heat ;)

I don't think either are open to Irish yet but I'll keep an eye on them

Great stuff. All Eastern Europe right? I loved the attitude and warmth of Latvians and Lithuanians when they worked in Dublin in big numbers. Don't think I've ever met an Estonian

Have you seen any info re: Irish allowed in there soon?

Play nice. Have already had to warn one person. People were much nicer on here pre Covid...

I'm not sure what you think is a bargain since you dismissed Portugal. Ryanair are running flights to Lisbon for 65 quid return in July. You won't find flights cheaper than that.

Airlines used to cancel under booked flights when they were booming. They won't fly empty planes with bargain prices when they are already hemorrhaging money. The era of cheap air travel is gone for the foreseeable future.

Most fire sales are either old stock that the retailer can't shift or trying to sell stock to keep going a bit longer, neither option works for airlines.

Paphos in Cyprus is worth a look....might be a bit far for some. Cheap enough Airbnb apartments, Ryanair flight is around 4hrs but nice spot to relax & we found it cheap enough. Plenty of good restaurants, great beaches around. Car hire etc is not too dear or excursions.

Anywhere in Germany or Switzerland that has lake towns or nice scenery? While a city break to Berlin etc is nice, in the summer it can be very hot. Girlfriend and I (in 20s) looking to go somewhere different as well, not Spain, Portugal, France, Holland.

    Greece and Malta look good

Ryanair are meant to be flying to Palanga in Lithuania this summer. Nice spot not overdeveloped, good places to eat and drink and nice beaches and decent weather
