Toyota Auris 2010 stop start

My car stops at the lights and restarts with the clutch.

But it seems to be malfunctioning and ,when it cuts out and I try to turn it on the ignition key it won't start.

If I wait a good period of time it does restart but it seems to be taking longer to restart over the last few days and I think it is dangerous to be stuck in traffic.....

This last time had me wondering if it was going to start at all ...must have been over two minutes

    Is your car 6 speed?

    Yes.

It actually is not my car but one the garage has lent me over this Covid period as they have my own Ford Focus in for repair but have not been open.

So I am not too familiar with this Toyota Auris but yes it is a 6 gear car.

Keep foot on clutch or turn off the stop start in settings

You’ll need to switch it off every time you turn the car on.

I have a 2010 6 speed. I always found the stop start worked intermittently. I did not realise it could be turned off.

I think the button says “Eco Off”

There are a few circumstances where stop start doesn’t turn the engine off (demister on, ac on high, low battery level, engine too cold etc)

Of course. The button :-). Not sure how reliable that is in my case

I mapped the stop-start function out of my (non Toyota) car,

    Stoopid nonsense.

How does that ECO OFF button work? Is it off when the light on it comes on or is it the other way round?

Yeah. Default setting is eco. Disabling eco turns it off and turns a light on.

When it's functioning correctly, what's so bad about it?

When it's functioning correctly, what's so bad about it?

Puts undue work on the battery and starter motor, engine is constantly heating up/down, not as good for the turbo to be stopping and starting (I don’t care if there’s supposed to be a pump that still runs), more wear on the flywheel ring gear, and even though the flywheel isn’t engaged, the inertia from stopping and starting isn’t good IMO.

If you’re in a situation where most of your driving is stop start, then you probably shouldn’t have a diesel. These are only a cod to get the emissions on the test cycle down on paper.

Aside from that, they’re just annoying. The only cars they’re ok on is hybrids, where they work seamlessly.

    ...diesel...
    There's your problem :)

I was assuming the OP's car is a petrol but I'm not so sure now. I've driven the 1.33 petrol Auris of that era with start stop and it didn't bother me at all (it was working correctly though). I've driven a different petrol automatic with it too and it was fine to drive and fairly seamless. I don't know about long term reliability.

Doesn't make so much sense with diesels with the forces required to start them and associated NVH. Petrols with dual VVT can start and stop smoothly, they don't need to be hybrids to do that.

I do normally drive a Prius though, so am very used to the engine starting and stopping whenever.

    OP’s is petrol

I had an Urban Cruiser with the 1.33 petrol too years ago and it was only ok as a system, doesn’t fire up straight away.

Same points re wear and tear apply (bar turbo and DMF)
