Van rental - excess cover

    Hi folks,

I'm looking to rent a van for a few days for a house move.
Easy enough I thought....but looking closer at the small print on some of the rentals, such as Enterprise requiring you to have a license for 11 years!

Seems Eurocar doesn't have this same restriction, but I noticed there excess is €2,000.

Is it possible to get van rental excess cover? All the sites I've checked explicitly exclude commercial vehicles and vans.

Have a look at Gocar.ie, might work out a lot easier depending on your location.

I rented from Eurocar anytime I rent vans (few times in the past 24 months).
They take the excess and you get it back afterwards. Commercial vehicles they seem less bothered by the odd scratch. I scraped the van (lightly but noticeable) on a pillar near their office and they weren't bothered and I got the 2k back that day.

Even Enterprise car rental allows a 50mm scratch/mark without issue.

OP I hired a van from Enterprise and took out their full cover, it doubled the cost but I only needed for a day and was still cheaper than the alternative. If I'd know how easy going they where I'd off skipped it, many rentals from "cheap" companies had my paranoid.

It's making me seriously consider about using "cheap" rental companies as they check everything on return, I was lucky once that I'd a picture of damage taken the next day after a night time pick-up, and are as they aren't in the rental zone take several hours more to pick up and return.

OP, Ive used vanrentals.ie in Ballymount for trucks a good few times. They do transits and the like too. Very good to deal with to be honest, and not a faceless chain operation.

You have to transfer your current insurance policy to their vans, you can't swap a private car policy to a commercial vehicle.

They will sell you insurance too. I've done it both ways with them, transferred my policy (commercial) and took insurance as I needed mine on the road too. I can't remember their excess though.

According to their FAQ they haven't offered insurance since November 2017

It’s possible I got it through hertz when I rented a van from them to move at Christmas time. Brought the excess down to a few hundred.

I'm with 123.ie private car insurance and they will cover you on a van for maximum of 3 days. We moved recently and I ended up buying a 2005 primastar van for 1100. Should be able to sell it for close enough to that aswell. I had looked at renting one but the hoops they make you jump through

To be honest it's about that long or a bit more since I last had a truck from them.

Van rental is a bit thin on the ground right now. Expect to pay a premium!
