Steering angle sensor potentiometer. Buried under the top kingpin on the left front hub. Used for Auto Diff lock and auto 4wd. Don’t remember how much the kit of bits are new but most don’t bother replacing and live with the fault appearing at key on.

Is it much of a job to do?

Only done one years ago so not sure it’d parts changed since. It’s not too bad a job, an hour or 2 at the most. Once you get top kingpin put on LH side it’s all down in the bottom of the axle beam itself.
But check first that wiring didn’t get snagged or cut somewhere, follow the steel tube along top of the axle on the left side, wiring used to get damaged around bottom of radiator area too and cause open circuits, might be your issue if it happened suddenly as opposed to intermittent to permanent fault.
